<b>Fourteen injured as troops attack civilians, MP in Mannar</b>

Fourteen civilians were seriously injured when Sri Lanka army troops indiscriminately attacked hundreds of people in Mannar town Thursday. Tamil National Alliance MP for Mannar, Mr. Vino Noharathalingam and the parish priest for Thalvupaadu were also attacked in the rampage. Hundreds of SLA troops, firing in the air, ran amok in the town centre with iron bars and clubs, pulling down Heroes Day decorations and assaulting civilians. They attacked and damaged the political office of the Liberation Tigers in Mannar town.
Mr. Noharathalingam MP told TamilNet that he was assaulted by soldiers while he was trying to help people who fled the town in panic, leaving behind their belongings, vehicles and bicycles.

A shelter that was constructed near the main bus station in Mannar town for the Heroes Day was pulled down by SLA troops.

The Sri Lanka army has poured hundreds of additional troops in Mannar town amid the growing tension, a spokesman for the Catholic Church said.

Troubles erupted around noon when the military blocked crowds of civilians from raising the Thamil Eelam flag in the Mannar town centre to mark the Great Heroes Week, Police said.

<b>Sri Lanka army fires into crowd in Vavuniya, six injured</b>

Six civilians were injured when Sri Lanka army opened fire indiscriminately on a crowd of people at Veppankulam Junction in Vavuniya town Thursday around 5.15 p.m. A civilian was seriously injured in the shooting. SLA troops fired directly into the crowds that were in front of the Pillaiyar temple where earlier in the morning the Thamil Eelam flag had been hoisted, according to the injured civilians. SLA troops pulled down the flagpole, tore up the flag and assaulted people who were in the area.
SLA troops and Police attempted to prevent crowds from hoisting the Thamil Eelam flag at Veppankulam Juntion. It failed when the crowds insisted that the flag had to be hoisted in memory of the war dead.

SLA troops returned later in the day in armoured carriers and attacked people in the area, residents of Veppankulam said.

The seriously injured civilian was taken to the Anuradhapura Hospital.

விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் மாவீரர் தின நிகழ்வில் ஏற்றப்பட்டுள்ள தமிழீழத் தேசியக் கொடியை அகற்றக் கோரியும் இராணுவ கட்டுப்பாட்டு பகுதியில் இது தொடர்பான நிகழ்வுகள் நடத்த அனுமதிக்கக் கூடாது எனவும் ஜே.வி.பியினர் இன்று திருகோணமலையில் ஆர்ப்பாட்டம் நடத்தினர்.

இந்த ஆர்ப்பாட்டத்திற்கு சிறீலங்கா நாடாளுமன்ற ஜேவிபி உறுப்பினர் ஜயந்த வீரசேகர தலைமை வகித்தார்.

இந்த ஆர்ப்பாட்டப் பேரணி மணிக்கூண்டு கோபுர சந்தியிலிருந்து புறப்பட்டது. போர் நிறுத்தக் கண்கானிப்புக் குழு என குறிப்பிடப்பட்ட உருவ பொம்மையையும் நோர்வே தேசியக் கொடியையும் தங்களுடன் அந்த கும்பல் எடுத்துச்; சென்றது.

விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் மாவீரர்கள் நினைவாலயம் அமைந்துள்ள இந்து கலாச்;சார மண்டபம் வீதி வழியாக போர் நிறுத்த கண்கானிப்புக் குழு அலுவலகத்தை நோக்கிச்; சென்ற ஆர்ப்பாட்டக் கும்பலை அவ்வீதி வழியாக செல்ல அனுமதி மறுத்து பொலிஸார் தடுத்தனர்.

அப்போது பேரினவாதக் கும்பல் பொலிசாரை நோக்கி கற்களை வீசி வீதித் தடைகளை அகற்ற முயன்றனர். பொலிசார் தடியடிப் நடத்தி கண்ணீர்ப புகைக் குண்டுகளை வீசினர்.

ஆத்தரமடைந்த பேரினவாதிகள் தங்களுடன் எடுத்து வந்த உருவபொம்மையையும் நோர்வே கொடியையும் அந்த இடத்திலேயே தீ வைத்து வெறியாட்டம் ஆடினர்.

இப்படி திட்டமிட்டு ஜேவிபியினரால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட பதற்றத்தையடுத்தே திருகோணமலை நகர பிரதேசத்தில் ஊரடங்குச்; சட்டம் அமுல்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.
