LTTE Leader in Norway Elected To Oslo's Municipal Council
Bandula Jayasekara in Colombo, SLT 7.30 A.M Friday 19 September. LTTE leader in Norway, Rajah Balasingham alias Bhaskaran got elected to Oslo 's Municipal Council as the Labour Party he contested from, won 15 seats in the 59 member Oslo Commune. The election was held on 15 September. Balasingham was 48 on the list of 59 elected. He received only 2,470 votes, where as the Labour Party candidate ahead of him received 17, 106 votes. Ellen Horn who led the Labour list polled 28,029 votes.
LTTE leader in Oslo, Balasingham managed to get a seat because his party managed to obtain 15 seats, whereas there were five candidates from other parties who received more votes than Bhaskaran, but failed to get elected. Three of the unsuccessful candidates got more than 3,000 votes. However, the overall position of Labour party had dropped by 1.5% partly due to the news that they are fielding a member of a terrorist organisation

Of the 5,000 odd Tamil voters, Balasingham received only 2,470. Balasingham was the only candidate to provide transport to Tamil voters to go to the booth. Norwegian Labour Party came under heavy criticism from the Norwegian Press and moderate Tamils living in Norway for nominating Balasingham to contest the Oslo elections due to his strong links with the LTTE. Norwegian newspaper, Aftenposten pointed out that LTTE was responsible for many violent acts . Even the UNF governments Minister for Community Development P. Chandrasekaran campaigned for the LTTE leader in Oslo, a move that took the Norwegian government by surprise, a government minister of Sri Lanka, campaigning in support of an opposition member in another country. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe is yet to call for explanation from Chandrasekaran on the matter and it is not known if he would call for explanation from Chadrasekaran at all. A political analyst in Sri Lanka questioned how could Norway, playing the role of facilitator and allow a member of a party to the conflict contest elections in Oslo. He said this would also pose further questions to the so-called neutrality and the impartiality of the Norwegians and create further doubt among the Sinhalese.
