Israel kills senior Islamic militant

HEBRON, West Bank (Reuters) - Israeli troops have killed a Palestinian militant commander, triggering vows of revenge amid mounting signs a six-week-old ceasefire critical to a new peace plan could collapse.

A surge of violence, including an army raid last week that killed two Hamas militants and prompted two retaliatory Palestinian suicide bombings, has overshadowed diplomatic efforts to stop the U.S.-led "road map" plan from unravelling.

Despite heightened tensions, Palestinian security chief Mohammed Dahlan and Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz held fresh security talks on Thursday night. Sources on both sides said significant progress was unlikely.

Israel planned to go ahead on Friday with a release of about 80 Palestinian prisoners, all arrested on criminal charges such as car theft or illegal entry into Israel, after a three-day delay due to Tuesday's bombings, security sources said.

The withdrawal from the towns of Ramallah and Tulkarem would begin in the last week of August, provided there are no shooting and bombing attacks and the Palestinian security forces begin dismantling militant groups, said Shirli Eden, an Israeli Defense Ministry spokeswoman.

Despite the withdrawal agreement, the situation remains tense.

The militant Islamic Jihad group has threatened to take revenge for an Israeli raid on Thursday, in which the group's leader in the West Bank city of Hebron, Mohammed Sidr, was killed.

A similar raid earlier this month in the West Bank city of Nablus prompted two suicide attacks this week, one by Hamas and the second by Iranian-backed renegades from Arafat's Fatah movement.
