முரளியின் சிறந்த பந்து வீச்சால் இலங்கை வெற்றி

மேற்கிந்திய தீவுகள் அணிக்கும் இலங்கை அணிக்கும் இடையிலான இரண்டாவது டெஸ்ட் கிரிகட் போட்டியில் சுழல் பந்து வீச்சாளர் முத்தையா முரளிதரனின் சிறந்த பந்து வீச்சுக் காரணமாக இலங்கை 240 ஓட்;டங்களால் வெற்றிப்பெற்றுள்ளது.

கண்டி அஸ்கிரிய மைதானத்தி;ல் நடைபெற்ற இரண்டாவது போட்டியில் இன்றைய ஆட்டத்தின் போதே இந்த வெற்றி இலங்கை அணிக்கு கிடைத்தது.

போட்டியின் முதல் இன்னிங்ஸ்களில் இலங்கை அணி 150 ஓட்டங்களையும் மேற்கிந்திய தீவுகள் அணி 148 ஓட்டங்களையும் பெற்றன.

இரண்டாவது இன்னிங்ஸில் இலங்கை அணிப்பெற்ற 375 ஓட்டங்களுக்கு பதிலளித்து துடுப்பாடிய மேற்கிந்திய தீவுகள் அணி 137 ஓட்டங்ளை மாத்திரமே பெற்றது.

மேற்கிந்திய தீவுகள் அணியின் இரண்டாம் இன்னிங்ஸின் போது இலங்கையின் வலது முறை சுழல் பந்து வீச்சாளர் முத்தையா முரளிதரன் 46 ஓட்டங்களுக்கு 8 விக்கட்டுகளை கைப்பற்றினார்.

Spinner Muttiah Muralitharan took 6-18 as Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by an innings and 96 runs with two days and two sessions to spare in Colombo.

The tourists were all out for 86 in just 27.4 overs, their lowest score in Test cricket.

Habibul Bashar and Khaled Mashud made 15, but only one other batsman reached double figures.

Muralitharan has now taken five wickets or more in a Test innings 47 times and he was named Man of the Match.

Resuming on 36-3, Bangladesh had only added three to their total before Bashar was caught behind off left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas.

Muralitharan achieved his first success of the day by bowling Tushar Imran for three and in his next over had Aftab Ahmed caught by Thilan Samaraweera for eight.

The same combination accounted for Mohammad Rafique, who only made four, before paceman Lasith Malinga (3-32) pushed Bangladesh to the bring of defeat by bowling Syed Rasel and Mashud.

The final word belonged to Muralitharan, who had Enamul Haque stumped by Kumar Sangakkara to finsih with match figures of nine for 60.

"Our bowlers did very little wrong in this match. They (Bangladesh) won the first session of the match, but we did nothing wrong after that," said Sri Lanka skipper Marvan Atapattu.

The second and final Test starts next Tuesday at the P Saravanamuttu Stadium and Bangladesh captain Bashar admitted they had to raise their performance in all areas by then.

"We had a chance to post a big total in the first innings but did not capitalise on it and we did not bat well in the second innings when the ball was turning.

"We are not doing what we have to do. We fielded better, but batting and bowling need to improve," he said.

It was their 34th defeat in 39 Tests since being granted full member status by the International Cricket Council five years ago.
