LTTE not Welcome in E.U. Capitals
Your Excellency,
Peace is the goal of all 70 million Tamils living all over the world. I
am one of the million.
The fact remains that it is the LTTE that initiated the peace process
since 2000.
The Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) under president Chandrika
Kumaratunga responded to the first initiative on December 24, 2000 with
a military offensive code named Agni Keela (Fire) and rained bombs and
heavy artillery fire in Muhamaalai in the North. At the beginning of
this year the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, flew over this area
when he visited Sri Lanka and said that it was like looking over
Hiroshima after the atomic bomb was dropped. I have myself gone by land
and visited this area and the destructions were unbelievable. .
It was the former Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe who responded to
the second initiative for an unconditional ceasefire from 24 December,
2001 to January 21, 2002 and signed the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) on
February 22, 2002.
No one in the world can plead ignoramus to the numerous brutal killings
carried out by the GOSL forces since February, 2002. There is one that
stands out clearly, viz the murder of Kumar Ponnambalam by those very
close to the GOSL. The inquiry into this murder was half-hearted and an
important witness who came forward to expose the truth was deliberately
run over by a vehicle at Moratuwa. I was in Colombo on that day.
Does the E.U. have evidence that the assassination of the Minister was
done by the LTTE? You have indicated in your press release that it was
"as told by the Government of Sri Lanka." But the Government which
said they have arrested two LTTE men involved in the murder has so far
refused to disclose the names of the two when LTTE leadership requested
it. Even a child would see the ulterior motive of the government to
blame the LTTE and use its clout with the E.U. to bring to naught all
the good work done by Norway and others.
Your ban is a direct blessing to the GOSL which also has said that it
will allow the LTTE to travel overseas. This was to prevent the LTTE
leaders exposing the injustices the GOSL was perpetrating against the
Tamils. The Government was only looking for opportunities to undermine
the trust the E.U. and Japan had on the LTTE. You have evidently
obliged the GOSL which was increasingly getting worried about the
visits of many world leaders, including Members of Parliament from
Australia and Canada, to Vanni.
I also wish to point out to you that if there is a fair investigation
by E.U. it would discover the Minister's murder was an inside job. By
his murder the GOSL has killed several birds with one stone:
1. Undermine Ranil Wickremesinghe's election campaign in the
presidential race.
2. It put an end to the aspiration of the deceased Minister to
become the Prime Minister as the Marxist JVP group wanted.
3. It helped them to manipulate and turn the world community
against the LTTE and the it helped to blame the LTTE as anti-peace.
These and many other reasons would eventually show the world that the
GOSL is using the present situation to demonize the LTTE.
I would like to recall to you that yesterday Canada made history when a
former refugee from Haiti was installed as the new Governor General and
Commander-in-Chief of Canada. Her Excellency Michaelle Jean fled Haiti
because of persecution. I would appeal to the good sense of the E.U. to
have the consciousness of Canada and know that nearly a million Tamils
fled the horrible persecution by the Sinhala government.
Like the new Governor General of Canada I also fled Sri Lanka under
excruciating circumstances. I was arrested and jailed twice and twice I
escaped death from the hands of racist mobs of the GOSL. Tens of
thousands of Tamils suffered oppression and humiliation much more than
me. Here in Canada and in Europe there are hundreds of our Tamils who
are victims of GOSL state terror in one way or other.
E.U. leaders must be aware of the criminal and flagrant denial of
Tsunami aid to people of Northeast. No one in the civilized world would
pardon the GOSL for this inhuman act. It is shameful the E.U. which is
quick to condemn the LTTE is observing deadly silence over this man-made
humanitarian disaster of denying right to the aid sent by foreign
nations.
Has the E.U forgotten the anti-E.U. attitude of the GOSL's controlled
press when the Commissioner of the E.U. went to Kilinochchi to meet with
the LTTE leadership? Has the E.U. forgotten the actions of the political
parties that support Chandrika government which burnt the effigy of the
E.U .Commissioner? The outburst of fanatical Buddhist clergy of the
Sinhala Urumya Party that he would shoot down that helicopter carrying
the E.U. commissioner before it reached Kilinochchi?
I join with Mr. Thamilselvan, the political leader of the LTTE in
expressing utter shock and dismay at your declaration. I do vehemently
protest your unfair condemnation of the LTTE which is the authentic
representatives of the Thamil people.
THEREFORE, I am prepared with a group of Tamils to come to your office
to pray and fast for freedom and justice.
Permit me to inform you I am copying this letter to Her Excellency The
Governor General of Canada, to our MPs, MPPs and to all the Church
leaders both in Canada and abroad.
My expectation is that the E.U. would deliberate in accordance with
justice and freedom to the oppressed. Your E.U. will never allow the
Tamil Nation to succumb to the hegemonic rule of the GOSL.
I hope and pray that you would seriously consider my request that
instead of taking steps that would put the Tamils on the brink of war;
you would support the cause of peace in Sri Lanka and silence the
enemies of peace.
I appreciate your kind cooperation.
Yours truly,
Tamils living all over the world
