The courts slammed a heavy fine on video pirating.
The Colombo commercial high court ruled on Thursday that prominent actor Joe Abeywickrama be paid ten million rupees in compensation.
Kapila Kumara Kothalawala, proprietor of Torana Video was found guilty of making pirate copies of a teledrama produced by Joe Abeywickrama.
Abeywickrama told courts that Torana had made pirate copies for sale of the teledrama

In defence the proprietor of Torana Video said that he made copies of the video only for archival purposes.
He said that he did not sell copies of the video.
High court judge KT Chithrasiri ruled in favour of Abeywickrama saying that Kothalwala was guilty of committing an offence under the intellectual property act.

இவ் வெற்றி பற்றி ஜோ அபேவிக்கிரம பேசும் போது அப்பாவிக் கலைஞர்களுடைய கலைகளை விற்று பணம் சம்பாதிப்பவர்களுக்கு எதிராக வழக்கு போட ஏழ்மையில் வாழும் கலைஞர்களால் முடிவதில்லை. அதற்கான பண பலம் மற்றும் பின்னணிகள் அவர்களிடம் இல்லை.
இறந்து போன பல கலைஞர்களது படைப்புகள் தொட்டு இளம் கலைஞர்களது படைப்புகள் வரை இப்படியானவர்களால் சூறையாடப்படுகிறது. அரசு கூட இவற்றைக் கண்டு கொள்வதில்லை. இதுவே இலங்கையில் திருட்டு வீடியோ சட்டத்துக்கு எதிராக நடத்தப்பட்டு தாக்கல் செய்யப்பட்டதும் வெற்றி பெற்றதுமான முதல் வழக்காகும் என்றார்.
மேலும் இவ் வழக்கை தாக்கல் செய்து வாதாடிய வழக்கறிஞர்கள் எதுவித பணமும் வாங்காமல் இலவசமாக வாதாடியதை வாஞ்சையோடு குறிப்பிட்டார்.
