Sri Lankan Kfir jets bomb LTTE controlled area in Trincomalee

Sri Lankan Kfir jets have been bombing LTTE controlled Sampoor, Ilakkanthai and Kattaiparichchan villages in Muttur, Trincomalee district from 5:00 p.m Tuesday. Casualty details are not available at the moment. There are also reports about multibarrel artillery fire. Sri Lankan Dvora attack crafts and gunboats were surrounding the LTTE controlled coastal areas in Trincomalee, civilian sources said.

With the Colombo bomb attack Tuesday, the duration of curfew has been advanced to 4 p.m.till 6 a.m. next day, police said.

Eighteen-hour curfew has been clamped down on Trincomalee district with effect from Tuesday evening at 4.p.m. about two hours after the bomb attack on Sri Lanka Army Commander in Colombo, sources said.

Security officials in Trincomalee decided to advance the duration of the curfew from 4 p.m. in the three police divisions, Trincomalee Town, Uppuveli and Chinabay in Trincomalee district on receipt of the information of the bomb attack on SLA commander, police said.

Twelve-hour curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. imposed in Trincomalee following April 12 bomb explosion in Trincomalee town and the violence, which resulted in the death of about twenty civilians, and the destruction of about 32 business houses belonged to Tamils and Muslims was later limited for eight hours later from 8 p.m. till 4 a.m.

S.Lanka truce monitors say military strike Tigers

COLOMBO, April 25 (Reuters) - Nordic truce monitors said on Tuesday that Sri Lanka's navy and airforce were launching air and artillery strikes on Tamil Tiger positions near the northeastern port of Trincomalee.

Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, Ulf Henricsson, told Reuters that air strikes had been launched and that the navy was also targeting positions in rebel territory following a suicide bomb attack on the army headquarters in Colombo.

"My assessment -- which is also my hope -- is that this is a limited retaliatory strike for today's attack," the retired Swedish major-general said. The air force said they could not comment for security reasons, but did not deny the report.

COLOMBO, April 25 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka said on Tuesday the military had launched air strikes and artillery fire against Tamil Tiger rebel positions in the northeast, but that it did not mean a return to war.

Head of the government peace secretariat, Palitha Kohona, told Reuters that military action was still ongoing following rebel shelling of the northeastern Trincomalee naval base and a suspected rebel suicide attack on Colombo's army headquarters.

"The LTTE did something this afternoon that clearly breached the ceasefire," he said, referring to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). "The government had to act. We still hope that the LTTE will decide to come to talks."

It was the first time the government had said it was carrying out military action against the Tigers since a 2002 truce.

Apr. 25 - Army commander wounded in assassination attempt by suspected Tamil Tiger rebels.

A suicide bomber blew herself up inside Sri Lanka's army headquarters on Tuesday (April 25), wounding the army commander and 11 others and calling into question a ceasefire with the Tamil Tiger rebels.

An army spokesman said that a suicide bomb went off near the army hospital apparently aimed at the army commander's vehicle. Sri Lanka's north and east have been rocked by claymore mine attacks and ethnic riots this month as a peace process between the government and Tigers remains deadlocked, but the attack on the capital took the violence to a new level.

The Colombo All-Share Index fell more than 3.2 percent after the blast, to 2216.74.

Pushpa Soysa, the head nurse at Colombo General Hospital, where the casualties were taken, said Army Commander Sarath Fonseka was being operated on and was in a critical condition. Witnesses said the roads around the army headquarters -- in central Colombo near to a popular sea-front park -- had been sealed off and several civilian ambulances were outside the heavily guarded compound.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels, who have been observing a shaky ceasefire with the government since 2002, have been known to use suicide bombers in their fight for a homeland for minority Tamils in Sri Lanka's north and east.

COLOMBO - Sri Lanka truce in tartars as government war planes bombed the rebel held Tamil villages in the eastern district of Trincomalee which seen an increase violence for the last three weeks.

According to early reports, Israeli built Kfir supersonic fighter jets started bombing the rebel held villages of Sampoor, Ilakkanthai and Kattaiparichchan. The bombing started at 5.30 pm local time and still continuing even after 7 pm local time, according to local sources. There were 6 sorties so far, they further said.

Loud explosions and deafening sound of Kfir continue to dominate the eastern costal town, a local resident said over the phone. No casualty figures made available at the moment.

There are also reports of multi barrel artillery fire from the army positions to rebel held area as well. Another report said that the government naval vessels also bombed the costal areas of the rebel held areas and surrounded the areas as well.

There is also an eighteen-hour curfew has been clamped down on Trincomalee district with effect from Tuesday evening at 4.p.m.

Earlier in the Capital Colombo, the army commander of the Sri Lanka armed forces, Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka, was seriously injured in a Bomb explosion inside his heavily guarded army head Quarters. Eight of his bodyguards were killed on the spot, according to military sources. Further 20 were injured on that incident which the government blames on a rebel women suicide bomber.

With the latest escalation of violence and the three forces of the government launched offensive on rebel held areas, the diplomats and analysts in the capital Colombo believe that the undeclared war waged for the last few weeks, now become an open warfare and the country is heading back to large scale war.

Mr.S.Elilan, Trincomalee district head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Tuesday night asked the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) to clarify whether the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has launched a full-scale war violating the ceasefire agreement. Mr.Elilan made this query in his complaint lodged with the SLMM over the air strike by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) and artillery shell attack by the Sri Lanka Army and gunboat attack by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) on the villages in Muttur east Tuesday evening, sources said.
Mr.Elilan brought to the notice of the SLMM that more than one hundred and fifty artillery shells fired by the Sri Lanka Army had fallen in several villages in Muttur east and exploded causing severe damages to the life and property of civilians. Kfir jets of the SLAF bombed more than six places in the Muttur east villages, sources said.

Mr.Elilan denied a statement made by the SLA that it had retaliated an attack by the LTTE on the Sri Lanka Navy Tuesday with air strike and artillery attack.

Elilan told the SLMM, "We did not fire a single shot against the Sri Lankan troops Tuesday. Hence the air strike by the SLAF, artillery attack by SLA has to be considered a serious blatant violation of the Ceasefire Agreement. SLMM should inquire into our complaint and should inform us whether the Sri Lanka Army has launched a full-scale war on the LTTE."

Elilan said the damages caused to lives and properties of Tamil families in the Muttur east villages in air strike, artillery and gunboat attacks are being assessed.

Sri Lanka Tigers vow to hit back

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels will retaliate against the government if air and artillery strikes continue on their territory, a senior official told Reuters on Wednesday.

The head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) peace secretariat, S. Puleedevan, said several civilians were dead and more fleeing the attacks, which started after a suicide bomb blast on Tuesday in Colombo that has been blamed on the rebels.

"They are firing with artillery and cannons," he said. "It is like a war situation in Trincomalee. If the attacks continue, the LTTE will be forced to take military defensive action."

The government says the strikes around the northeastern port of Trincomalee are a limited retaliation for attacks on its forces.

TNA urges International Community to act

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Wednesday condemned the GoSL and its peace secretariat for "duplicitous behavior" and "carrying on a malicious and false campaign to mislead the international community," and urged the International Community to "realize this reality and take the appropriate action to compel the Sri Lankan State to act in a responsible way in the interest of the peace process," in a press release issued in Colombo Wednesday.
Full text of the press release follows:

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentary Group urgently met in the backdrop of the grave events of Thursday 25th April 2006. In this regard the TNA wishes to place on record the following.

The GOSL and the LTTE met in Geneva on the 22nd and 23rd of February 2006 for talks on the implementation of the CFA. At the conclusion of the talks a statement was released stating that the GOSL and the LTTE were committed to respecting and upholding the CFA.

The GOSL and the LTTE also committed themselves to taking all necessary measures to ensure that there will be no intimidation, acts of violence, abductions or killings.

Further, the LTTE committed itself to taking all necessary measures to ensure that there will be no acts of violence against the security forces and the police. The GOSL in turn committed itself to taking all necessary measures in accordance with the CFA to ensure that no armed group or person other that the government security forces will carry arms or conduct armed operations. The parties also agreed to meet again in Geneva from the 19th to the 21st of April 2006.

Consequent to the agreements reached in Geneva, all hostile acts against the GOSL armed forces and the police were brought to an end. However, the GOSL delegation no sooner that they returned to Sri Lanka began to behave in a manner that was disrespectful, and undermined the said agreement. Further to this, the GOSL has failed to take any action whatsoever to disarm and dismantle the functioning of the paramilitaries / armed groups. Contrary to this, the violence and killings of paramilitaries and armed groups against the Tamil civilian population and the LTTE escalated many fold. The fact that the paramilitaries and armed groups worked together with the GOSL armed forces in all these activities is well known.

This is amply demonstrated by the attack on the LTTE forward defense lines in Vavunathivu, and the abduction of 5 LTTE cadres from Trincomalee in two separate incidents on 4/3/2006. From this date onwards the LTTE has been regularly targeted with the result in many cadres being killed and injured.

On the 5th of March 2006, with a civilian being targeted in Valachchenai, Batticaloa, killings against the civilians by the GOSL armed forces and its paramilitary groups also resumed in earnest. Up to date there have been over 85 Tamil speaking civilians been killed.

It is in one such incident that on the 7th of April 2006 Mr. V. Vigneswaran, the prominent TNA member who was to be appointed as a National List Member of Parliament to take the place of the late Mr. Joseph Pararajasingham was assassinated in a High Security Zone in broad daylight. The TNA wishes to stress that until this incident, there was no hostile acts whatsoever against the GOSL armed forces or the police. It should be noted that Hon. N. Raviraj who was returning from Trincomalee after attending the funeral of Mr. Vigneswaran was severely attacked by Sinhala thugs whilst the GOSL naval forces stood by.

Whilst this be the true state of affairs, the GOSL and its peace secretariat have been carrying on a malicious and false campaign to mislead the international community by stating that the GOSL and its armed forced have been demonstrating maximum restraint in the face of provocative action by the LTTE. The TNA condemns this duplicitous behavior of the GOSL and its peace secretariat.

The TNA wishes to stress that it is after a concerted State terror campaign against Tamil civilians and the LTTE that from 8th of April 2006 the GOSL armed forces and the police began to be targeted.

In addition to the above the TNA wishes to state the following with regard to the anti-Tamil racist pogroms that have been taking place in Trincomalee of late. The said pogroms commenced within minutes of a bomb explosion in a market on 12th April 2006. Instantly, more than 30 Tamil shops were selectively robbed and burnt by Sinhala thugs with either the support of the GOSL armed forces or whilst they stood by. In addition over 20 Tamil civilians were brutally murdered. That the Sinhala thugs were unleashed on the Tamil civilian population by being brought by the truckloads should be taken serious note of. Judging from the various eyewitness accounts of the systematic way in which the Trincomalee incidents unfolded, the TNA has little doubt that the whole episode was orchestrated to ethnically cleanse Trincomalee of the Tamil people, which has been a policy of the Sri Lankan State for over 50 years.

There can be little doubt that the attack on the 25th of April 2006 within the Army Headquarters in Colombo was a direct consequence of the State terror that has been unleashed against the Tamil civilian population of the Northeast, despite the Geneva round of talks. Consequent to this incident, Tamil and Muslim villages situated in Trincomalee and Muttur have come under indiscriminate air, sea and land bombing and shelling, that has resulted in the death of at least 12 Tamil speaking civilians, inclusive of a 2 year old child and a Muslim Moulavi. Apart from this several civilians have been seriously injured. The immense sense of insecurity that has been created by the indiscriminate and blatantly anti-Tamil actions of the GOSL armed forces has also resulted in over forty thousand Tamil civilians leaving GOSL controlled areas and taking refuge in LTTE controlled areas.

The reasons for the current grave situation that is fast deteriorating in to a complete breakdown of the CFA, is clearly due to the GOSL systematically sabotaging the agreements reached at Geneva, coupled with the GOSL acting irresponsibly with regard to providing transport to the senior Eastern Commanders of the LTTE, that have effectively prevented the second round of Geneva talks from taking place.

If the International Community fails to realize this reality and take the appropriate action to compel the Sri Lankan State to act in a responsible way in the interest of the peace process, the TNA fears that the result would be a further escalation that would inevitably lead to the complete breakdown of the CFA.
