Saudi attack kills BBC man, injures another

LONDON - A cameraman working for the BBC was killed and a British journalist was injured on Sunday in a shooting in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, the broadcaster said.

The dead man was identified as Mr Simon Cumbers, 36, an Irish citizen. The injured man was BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, 42.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw condemned the attack on the two journalists, and pledged that Britain 'will continue to do all we can to support the Saudi authorities in their fight against terrorism'.

The two men had went to Saudi Arabia last week following the terrorist attacks in Khobar, in which 22 people died, and had been reporting since then for the British Broadcasting Corporation.

BBC Director of News Richard Sambrook said: 'We are seeking more details about what happened in this incident.'

In Riyadh, the police chief told the official Saudi Press Agency that the two Britons came under fire from unidentified gunmen in a 'popular' neighbourhood of Riyadh at 5.45pm.

The neighbourhood, Suweidi, is known as an ultraconservative area that has seen several shoot-outs between security forces and suspected militants.

Mr Cumbers was a freelance journalist and cameraman who had worked for Associated Press Television News as well, the BBC said.

Mr Straw extended his sympathy to the families of both men, and praised Mr Gardner's work for the BBC. 'Mr Frank Gardner is an outstanding reporter who always seeks to do everything he can to explain the dangerous world we live in to the BBC audience,' he said. 'I have nothing but admiration for journalists like Mr Gardner who know their lives are at risk as they go about their work.' -- AP
