Why does the South feel the equilibrium has been lost? The election of President Rajapakse demonstrates clearly that the southern voter had been disenchanted with the CFA particularly with the rate of political killings and child abductions.

Some are arguing that the LTTE escalation of violent conflict may be a prelude to seeking concessions from the government, as a sequel to restarting the talks on the CFA.
If this is so then the LTTE is employing a high-risk strategy, which could boomerang on them. If it is a prelude to open hostilities then it means that the LTTE thinks that it would secure a quick military victory before resuming talks again once the equilibrium is restored.

Although the LTTE has the military ability to achieve some of its objectives, a military adventure to reach its objectives would have serious consequences for itself and for the country as a whole. The Government whilst weak militarily has accumulated goodwill within the international community, and India would not allow such an adventure. The government would naturally try to develop a broad anti terrorist alliance amongst India and the Western powers. Such are the dreams of those who seek to advise the President.

The Sri Lankan Government on the other hand would also make a profound mistake in thinking that an easy victory would be possible with the LTTE. The military always underestimated the strength of the LTTE. The fact that the army was not allowed to meet the LTTE to reduce tensions is regrettable since it has been standard practice over many years. So far the President has not invited the Norwegians to visit the country although they have been waiting for such an invitation.
Surely the Norwegians should be asked to meet the leader of the LTTE and the President. The SLMM had over the years facilitated the military from both sides. These talks should be resumed immediately. There has been too much delay in resuming talks on the CFA. High priority should be given to start these talks. All efforts must be made to reduce the continued escalation of violence. This is the need of the hour.
