Gunmen kill Tamil Tiger rebel in eastern Sri Lanka
Unidentified gunmen on Friday killed a Tamil Tiger rebel in the stronghold of a renegade guerrilla leader in eastern Sri Lanka, the military said.
The rebel was gunned down while riding a motorcycle in the eastern town of Kiran in Batticaloa, military spokesman Brig. Daya Ratnayake said.
Scores of people have been killed in fighting between the mainstream Tigers and the rival faction since the renegade leader broke away in March last year.
Batticaloa, 220 kilometers (135 miles) east of Colombo, is a stronghold of the renegade leader and was one of the areas hit hardest by the Dec. 26 tsunami in the island nation.
Ratnayake identified the dead rebel as Viveshan and said another man traveling with him escaped without injury. Most rebel fighters use only one name.
