<b>Key facts in brief
Since 29 March 2002, the area code has been included in all telephone numbers, even for local calls. This also applies to calls from or to numbers with an 01 code (Zurich area code).
For example:
Since 29 March 2002, the number (01) 765 43 21 has become 01 765 43 21.
If calling from abroad, as before dial: +41 1 765 43 21
From 1 March 2004*, it will be possible to dial numbers starting 01 using the code 01 or 044. This "double numbering" is guaranteed until March 2007.
For example:
From 1 March 2004, the number 01 765 43 21 can also be called by dialling 044 765 43 21.
If calling from abroad, the number +41 1 765 43 2141 can also be called by dialling +41 44 765 43 21.
In March 2005, all subscribers with a number starting with the code 01 will automatically be attributed the same number with the code 044. Their number will then officially be an 044 number. It will be possible to dial the number using the code 01 or 044 until March 2007.
For example:
From March 2005, the number 01 765 43 21 becomes 044 765 43 21.
The number 044 765 43 21 can also be called by dialling 01 765 43 21
If calling from abroad, the number +41 44 765 43 2141 or +41 1 765 43 21 can be used.

Two new codes, 043 and 044, have been introduced in addition to the code 01 in the Zurich area:
Thanks to the additional code 043 more telephone numbers are now available in the Zurich area. The code 043 was introduced so that new subscribers within the Zurich area code can avoid having to change their number at a later date.
The 044 code was introduced for the migration of code 01, scheduled for March 2004 to March 2007. Most 044 numbers have been reserved for this.
It is not possible to obtain the code 044 before 1 March 2004 as well as keeping a current 01 number: subscribers with an 01 number who want to migrate to a 10-digit number before 1 March 2004 will in effect obtain a completely new number which is different from their existing number.
* Initially, the period of parallel operation for codes 01 and 044 was planned for two years, from March 2005 to March 2007. In May 2003, following an initiative of the Federal Communications Commission which sought to reduce the costs as much as possible, it was finally possible to agree with the telecommunication services providers an increase of this parallel operation to three years, from March 2004 to March 2007. </b>
