Feeding a Sri Lankan school for a year
By Jacqueline Theodoulou
A CYPRIOT charity is to support the children of a Sri Lankan school who fell victim of last year’s tsunami.
The initiative by Medecins du Monde Cyprus involves feeding the 1,200 children of the Hegala Mahavijyalaya Kosgoda School every day for 12 months.
It will cost an estimated £55,000 to realise the plan, which will cover expenses involving the food product company, the transportation of the food to the school, the administration costs and other possible costs.
Medecins du Monde-Cyprus is part of the worldwide organisation and has so far offered its medical help to numerous communities that were struck by the tsunami.
From December 2004 until February this year, 45 volunteers visited Bentota in Sri Lanka and treated more than 5,800 patients for free. They also distributed food.
Equipment was bought for three regional schools and pharmaceutical materials for eight hospitals.
They also helped victims in the Maldives, Seychelles and Tanzania where many died and thousands needed medical attention.
