"ஆரிய மொழிக்குடும்பத்தில், ஆங்கிலம், ஜெர்மன், பிரெஞ்சு போன்ற மொழிகளெல்லாம் இன்னும் செழிப்புடன் பேசப்பட்டு, உலகவழக்கில் இருக்கிறாப்ல! இந்திய ஆரியமொழியான சமற்கிருதத்தை ஏன் மக்கள் மறந்துவிட்டார்கள்?", என்று வருத்தத்துடன் கேட்டபடியே வந்தார் நண்பர்.

சமற்கிருதம் எக்காலத்தும் பேசப்படாத மொழியே!

"சமற்கிருதம் எக்காலத்திலும் மக்களால் பேசப்படாத மொழி; சமயம், இலக்கியம், அறிவு நூற்கள் ஆகியன இந்தியாவெங்கும் வாழும் மேற்குடி மக்களுக்கு மட்டுமே உரியனவாக இருக்கவேண்டும் என்ற நோக்கத்தில் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட அரை செயற்கை மொழியே சமற்கிருதம்; அடிப்படை எழுத்துக்களையே 'சிவசூத்திரங்கள்' என்று பெயரிட்டு, சிவபெருமான் உடுக்கையிலிருந்து பிறந்தது என்றும், ஒவ்வொரு எழுத்துக்கும் ஒரு தேவதை உண்டு என்றும்,  'தேவபாஷை' என்றும் கதைகட்டினார்கள்", என்ற என்னை இடைமறித்து,

"அதற்காக சமற்கிருதத்தைப் பேசப்படாத மொழி என்று எப்படிச் சொல்ல முடியும்?", என்று சூடானார் நண்பர்.

"சற்றுப் பொறுமையைக் கேளப்பா! பெருவாரியான சாமானிய மக்களை சூத்திரர்கள், இழிமக்கள், வேசிமக்கள், அடிமைகள், புலையர்கள் என்று பழித்து, அவர்கள் தேவபாஷையைக் கேட்பதோ, பேசுவதோ பாவம் என்று விதிசெய்து உருவாக்கப்பட்ட செயற்கை மொழி சமற்கிருதம்;  பிராகிருதம் என்றால் இயற்கை மொழி என்றும், சமற்கிருதம் என்றால் திருந்தச் செய்யப்பட்ட மொழி என்றும் பொருள்; 'சமற்கிருதம்' என்னும் அதன் பெயருக்கான பொருளே அது பேசப்படாத மொழி என்பதை உரக்க அறிவிக்கும்", என்றேன் நான்.

"நீ சொல்வதை ஒத்துக்க முடியல! இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் வெளக்கமாச் சொல்லு!" என்றார் நண்பர்.

"மக்கள் பேச்சு வழக்கில் புழங்கிய ஒரு மொழி, பிற்காலத்தில் பேச்சு வழக்கிலிருந்து ஒழிந்தால் அதை வழக்கொழிந்த மொழி என்று சொல்வது சரியாய் இருக்கும். சமற்கிருதம் எந்த மக்களாலும் பேசவே படாத போது, அம்மொழியை வழக்கொழிந்த மொழி என்பது எப்படிப் பொருந்தும்? பெருவாரி மக்களின் நினைவில் ஒருக்காலத்தும் இல்லாத சமற்கிருதத்தை மறக்கப்பட்ட மொழி என்பது எப்படி உண்மையாகும்?  எனவே, மக்கள் சமற்கிருதத்தை மறந்து விட்டார்கள் என்பது பொருளற்ற கருதுகோள்.", என்றேன் நான்.

உலகவழக்கு ஒழிந்த மொழி வேத ஆரிய மொழியே!

"அப்படின்னா 'ஆரியம் போல் உலகவழக்கு அழிந்து ஒழிந்து சிதையா உன் சீரிளமைத் திறம் வியந்து செயல் மறந்து வாழ்த்துதுமே' என்று மனோன்மணியம் சுந்தரனார் பாடிய தமிழ்த்தாய் வணக்கப்பாடலில் சொல்லப்பட்ட 'ஆரியம்' சமற்கிருதம் இல்லையா?", என்று கொதித்தார் நண்பர்.

"இல்லை! தமிழ்த்தாய் வணக்கத்தில் மனோன்மணியம் சுந்தரனார் குறித்த 'ஆரியம்' வேதகால ஆரியர்கள் இந்தியாவுக்குள் வந்தபோது பேசிய எழுத்தில்லா மொழி", என்றேன் நான்.

"அப்படியே ஆகட்டும்! என் கேள்வியெல்லாம் நான்கு வேதங்களைத் தந்த வளமான ஆரியமொழி எப்படி உலக வழக்கிலிருந்து அழிந்தது என்பதுதான். அதற்கான விடைசொல்ல முடியுமா?", என்று பரபரத்தார் நண்பர்.

மேலை ஆரியமொழிகளை ஆய்வு செய்தால் வேத ஆரியமொழி எவ்வாறு செத்தது என்று அறியலாம்!

"ஆங்கிலம், பிரெஞ்சு, ஜெர்மனி உள்ளிட்ட ஆரியமொழிகளை ஆராய்வதன் மூலம் இதற்கு விடை கிடைக்கும்", என்றேன் நான்.

"போகாத ஊருக்கு வழி சொல்லாதே! எனக்குப் புரியும்படி ஒன்னால சொல்லமுடிஞ்சா, நான் கேட்டுக்கிறேன். இல்லன்னா தெரியாத எத்தனையோ-ல இதுவும் இருக்கட்டும்", என்றார் வெறுப்புடன்.

ஆங்கில மொழியின் சில நகைமுரண்கள்!

"சரி. நமக்கெல்லாம் தெரிஞ்ச ஆங்கிலம்-ன்ற ஒரு ஆரியமொழியின் சில கூறுகளை ஆய்வு செய்து காட்டறேன். பாத்துட்டு, சரியான்னு நீயே தெளிவாகச் சொல்ல முடியும்", என்றேன் நான்.

"ஆகட்டும்!", என்று உற்சாகமானார் நண்பர்.

"அரைகுறை ஆங்கிலம் அறிந்த ஆசிரியரும், அவரின் மாணவரும் பேசுவதுபோல் வரும் ஒரு நகைச்சுவைத் துணுக்கை இப்போது பார்க்கலாம்:

ஆங்கில ஆசிரியர்:      ஸ்பெல் த வோர்ட் 'க்நைஃபே" ("Spell the word "knife")

ஆங்கில மாணவன்:    "ஐ டோன்ட் க்நொவ் சார்" ("I don't know(க்நொவ்) Sir")

ஆங்கில ஆசிரியர்:      "யூ ஆர் வ்ரோங்" ("You are wrong(வ்ரோங்)")

எப்படியிருக்கு?" என்றேன் நான்.

"என்னுடைய ஆங்கில ஆசிரியர் 'Neibour' என்ற சொல்லுக்கு Nei என்பதை நெய், bour என்பதை பவர் என்று பதம் பிரித்து 'நெய்பவர்' என்று சேர்த்து உச்சரிக்கக் கற்றுக் கொடுத்தார். அறிவியல் ஆசிரியர் ஒருநாள் 'Neibour' என்ற சொல்லை,  /ˈneɪbə(r)/ என்று மிகச்சரியாக உச்சரித்தபோது, மாணவர்கள் அனைவரும் விழுந்து விழுந்து சிரித்தோம்! காரணம் அறியாமல் குழம்பிய அறிவியல் ஆசிரியர், கோபத்தில் முதல் பெஞ்சிலிருந்தவன் தலையில் ஓங்கிக் குட்டியதும் 'கப்சிப்' ஆனோம்", என்று அவர்தம் பள்ளிக்கால அனுபவத்தைப் பகிர்ந்தார் நண்பர்.

"அதெல்லாம் கிடக்கட்டும். ஆங்கிலேயனே பதினாலாம் நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு "knife" என்பதை "க்நீஃவே" "know" என்பதை "க்நொவ்" என்றும் "wrong" என்பதை "வ்ரோங்" என்றும்தான் உச்சரித்தான் என்றால் நம்ப முடிகிறதா?", என்று கேட்டேன். (பதினைந்தாம் நூற்றாண்டின் Dictionary-யிலிருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்டவை கீழே தரப்பட்டுள்ளன.)

"குழப்பமாயிருக்கே? இங்கிலீஸ்காரனே இங்கிலீஸ் தப்பாப் பேசினா நாமல்லாம் எம்மாத்திரம்!", என்றார் வியப்புடன்.

இயல்புமொழி தமிழில் சொற்கள் மெய்யெழுத்தில் தொடங்கா!

"மேற்கண்ட மூன்று வார்த்தைகளும் 'க்-K', 'வ்-W' ஆகிய மெய்யெழுத்தில் தொடங்குபவை. இயல்புமொழியான தமிழில் 'சொற்கள் மெய்யெழுத்தில் தொடங்காது' என்னும் இலக்கணம் ஏன் வந்தது? இயல்பாகப் பேசுகிற எவருக்கும், ஒரு சொல்லின் தொடக்கத்தில் மெய்யெழுத்தப் போட்டுண்டு, மலர்ச்சிக்கல்(Constipation) வந்தவன்போல முக்க முடியாது-ங்கறதுனால தமிழ்ச் சொற்கள் இயல்பாக மெய்யெழுத்தில் தொடங்கவில்லை! தமிழ் இலக்கணம்-ங்கறது தமிழ்மக்கள் தமிழ்மொழியை எவ்வாறு  இயல்பாகப் பேசி வழங்கினார்களோ, அம்முறையை உற்றுநோக்கியே உருவாக்கப்பட்டன.", என்ற நான் தொடர்ந்து,

"முக்கும் மெய்யெழுத்துக்களில் தொடங்கும் ஆங்கிலச் சொற்களில், காலப்போக்கில், அம்மெய்யெழுத்துக்கள்,  மக்களின் இயல்பான பேச்சு வழக்கில், ஒலியிழந்து, 'Silent'-டா ஊமையாய்ப் போயிருச்சு! மக்களின் பேச்சு இயல்புக்கு மாறான முக்கல் ஒலி ஊமையாய்ப் போச்சு! இதுதான்  நடந்தது!", என்று முடித்தேன்.

"Silent ஆனப்பொறவும் காலிப் பெருங்காயடப்பா மாதிரி, அந்த எழுத்துக்கள ஏன் இன்னமும் புடிச்சித் தொங்குரானுவ!", என்றார் நண்பர்.

'க்நீஃவே' 'நைஃப்' ஆன கதை!

"ஆமாம், பழைய ஒலிப்பு "க்நீஃவே (Knife)" என்பது எழுத்து வடிவில் இன்றும் அப்படியே இருக்கிறது. ஆனால், இக்கால ஒலிப்பு முறைப்படி அது  'நைஃவ்' என்று ஒலிக்கப்படுகின்றது. இங்கு, 'க்-K' என்ற மெய்யெழுத்து ஊமை எழுத்தாய்ப் போய்விடுகின்றது. 'நீ = ந்+ஈ"-யில் வரும் 'ஈ' என்ற உயிரொலி திரிந்து 'ஐ' ஆகியதால், 'நீ' என்பது 'நை' என்று மாறிவிட்டது. இறுதியில் வரும் 'ஏ' ஒலிப்பு இல்லாமல் ஊமை எழுத்தாய் 'Silent' ஆனது. போதுமா!", என்றேன் நான்.

"அடேங்கப்பா! விட்டா ஆங்கிலத்துக்கும் புணர்ச்சி இலக்கணம் எழுதிருவ போல!", என்று உரக்கக் கைகொட்டிச் சிரித்தார் நண்பர்.

"அதெல்லாம் என்னால முடியுமாப்பா! தமிழில் இதற்கெல்லாம் திரிபு இலக்கணம், புணர்ச்சி இலக்கணம் என்று உண்டு. ஆங்கிலத்தில் அத்தெளிவு இல்லாமையால், ஒலி மாறுபாடுகளால் சொற்களும், மொழியும் பெரும் மாற்றத்துக்கு உள்ளாகி, புதுச்சொற்களாகவும், புது மொழியாகவும் உருமாறுகின்றன. ஆனால் ஆங்கில எழுத்தில் இம்மாற்றங்கள் வரவில்லை", என்றேன் நான்.

"ஊமை எழுத்து-ங்கற அக்கப்போர்-னால வெட்டியா ஒவ்வொரு சொல்லோட எழுத்துக்களையும், ஒலிப்பு முறைகளையும் 'உரு'ப்போட வேண்டிருக்கு", என்று தன் வேதனையைச் சொன்ன நண்பர், தொடர்ந்து,

"இப்பிடி நா யோசிக்கல. ஆனா எழுத்துக்கள் 'silent' ஆவுறது ஒரு word-க்கு நடுப்புறமும் வரத்தானே செய்யுது!", என்று திடுமென ஒரு புதிய குறுக்குக் கேள்வியை வீசினார் நண்பர்.

ஆங்கிலத்தில் 14 ஊமை எழுத்துக்கள்!

"உண்மைதான். ஆங்கிலத்தின் 26 எழுத்துக்களில் B, C, D, E, G, H, K, L, N, P, S, T, U, W ஆகிய 14 எழுத்துக்கள், சொற்களில் அவை வரும் இடங்களைப்பொருத்து, ஊமை எழுத்துக்களாய் மாறுகின்றன. 'silent Letter' எனப்படும் ஊமை எழுத்து, அது வரும் சொல்லில் உச்சரிக்கப்படாவிட்டலும், அச்சொல்லின் பொருளையும், உச்சரிப்பையும் மாற்றும் சக்தி கொண்டது", என்றேன் நான்.

"அடேங்கப்பா! ஆங்கிலத்துல 'AFIJ MOQRV XYZ'-ங்கற 12 எழுத்துக்கள்தான் எப்பவும் பேசுற எழுத்துக்கள்-னு சொல்லு! அறுபது விழுக்காடு ஆங்கிலச் சொற்களில், கொறஞ்சது ஒரு ஊமைஎழுத்தாவது கட்டாயம் இருக்கும் போல!", என்று ஆச்சரியப்பட்டார் நண்பர்.

அறுபது விழுக்காடு(60%) ஆங்கிலச்சொற்கள் ஒரு  ஊமை எழுத்தையாவது கொண்டவை!

"மிகச் சரியாகச் சொன்னாய் நண்பா! உண்மையில், ஆங்கில மொழியின் 60 சதவீத சொற்கள், குறைந்தது ஒரு ஊமை எழுத்தையாவது கொண்டவையே! ஆங்கிலமொழி கற்பவருக்கு இவை பெரும் தடைக்கற்களாகவே உள்ளன. (இக்கட்டுரையின் முடிவில் காண்க: 14 ஆங்கில ஊமை எழுத்துக்களின் தொகுப்பு - அட்டவணை) ஆங்கிலத்தின் மொழி வரலாற்றை உற்று நோக்கினால், தொடக்கக் காலத்தில் இவ்வெழுத்துக்கள் உச்சரிக்கப்பட்டு, பிற்காலத்திலேயே ஊமையாய்ப் போயிருக்கின்றன என்பது புலனாகும்", என்றேன் நான்.

"இதிலிருந்து நீர் எமக்கு அறிவிக்கும் கருத்து!? . . .", என்று திருவிளையாடல் நக்கீரர் ஸ்டைலில் கேள்விக் கணையை என்மீது வீசினார் நண்பர்.

மெய்யெழுத்தில் தொடங்கும் ஆரியச்சொற்கள் வேதமொழியின் அழிவுக்கு முக்கியமான காரணி!

"ஆ! இன்னுமா புரியவில்லை! செயற்கையாய்க் கனத்த ஒலிகளில் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட ஆரிய வேதமொழி (பிற்காலத்தில் சமற்கிருதமொழி) மெய்யெழுத்தைப் போட்டு முக்கும் சொற்கள் பலவற்றையும் தன்னகத்தே கொண்டு விளங்கியதால், ஆரியர்களே தொடர்ந்து முக்கிப் பேசமுடியாமல் மூச்சுத் திணறினர். ஆங்கிலேயர்கள் அத்தகைய சொற்களில் வரும் முக்கும் மெய்யெழுத்துக்களை ஊமை எழுத்துக்களாக்கி(silent sounds Letters), மொழியைக் காப்பாற்றிக் கொண்டனர்.", என்ற என்னை இடைமறித்து,

"இன்னமும், ஆகமக் கோவில்களில் தொடங்கி, சுடலைமாடன் கோயில் வரைக்கும் ஊடுருவிக் கோலோச்சுகிறது நீ சொல்ற 'முக்குற தேவபாடை'! அதுமட்டுமா, காதுகுத்தில் தொடங்கி, கருமாதி வரை, அன்றாட சமய, சமூகச் சடங்குகளிலும் 'தேவபாடை சமற்கிருதம்' வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் போது, ஆரியத்தை எப்படி செத்தமொழி என்று சொல்லலாம்?", என்று சாமியே ஆடிவிட்டார் நண்பர்.

"உண்மைதான் நண்பா! 'தேவபாடை'யைக் காவலாக்கொண்டு ஆன்மிக மையங்களான கோவில்களில் ஆரியர்கள் இன்றும் கோலோச்சுவதை அனைவரும் அறிவார்கள். ஆனால், 'தேவபாடை' என்ற வீம்புடன் கனத்த ஒலிகளைக் கைவிடாமல் முக்கிக்கொண்டு மாற்றத்துக்கு உடன்படாத ஆரிய வேதமொழியை பிராமணர்கள் அல்லாத ஏனைய ஆரியர்கள் கைவிட்டுவிட்டு, தாங்கள் வாழும் ஊரின் மக்கள் பேசும்மொழியில் பேசத் தொடங்கியதால், ஆரிய வேதமொழி உலகவழக்கிலிருந்து மங்கியது. கால ஓட்டத்தில் ஆரியப் பிராமணர்களே தங்கள் இல்லங்களில் பேசும்போது, வேதமொழியில் முக்க முடியாமல், உள்ளூர் மக்கள் மொழியிலேயே பேசத் தொடங்கியதால் வேத ஆரிய மொழி உலகவழக்கு அழிந்து ஒழிந்திருக்கவேண்டும்", என்றேன் நான்.

"வேத ஆரியமொழி எழுத்து வடிவத்தைக் கண்டதா? சமற்கிருதம் எப்போது உருவாக்கப்பட்டது?", என்று தொடர்க்கேள்விகளால் துளைத்தார் நண்பர்.

"வரும் நாட்களில் மொழிகளின் இயற்கையை முதலில் பேசலாம். அதன் ஊடேயே ஆரியம் குறித்த உன் கேள்விகளுக்கும் விடை கிடைக்கும். இப்போ நாம காணும் பொங்கலைக் கொண்டாடலாம்! தமிழனுக்குத் தை முதல்நாள்தானே ஆண்டு பிறக்கிறது! தமிழ்ப்புத்தாண்டு வாழ்த்துக்கள் நண்பா!", என்று விடை பெற்றேன் நண்பரிடம்.

 Often silent letters in English are actually diacritic letters. This means that rather than being pronounced, they change the pronunciation of another syllable.
 Silent B
The letter B is usually not pronounced after the letter 'm' at the end of a word.
'Silent b' words :  Comb, bomb, thumb, climb, tomb, crumb, lamb
Other Examples:  dumb : He was struck dumb with horror; limb : This soldier has lost the use of two limbs; numb : My fingers are numb with cold; womb : A baby spends nine months in the womb; catacomb :A catacomb is an underground cemetery.
B is usually not pronounced before the letter T.
'Silent b' words : Doubt, doubtful, subtle, debt.
Other Examples: debt : Many people are in debt to their bank; doubt : I doubt if we will have enough money to go on holiday; subtle : His jokes are so subtle we can't understand them.
 Silent C
The letter C is silent in the combination of SC.
'Silent sc' words : Scissors, ascent, fascinate, muscle.
The letter C is silent before the letters K and Q.
'Silent k, q' words : Lock, block, puck, acknowledge; Aqua, Acquit, Acquiesce.
 Silent D
The letter D is silent when it appears before the letters N and G.
'Silent d' words : Wednesday, cadge, Pledge, grudge.
D is silent in the following Common words: Wednesday, handsome, handkerchief, sandwich.
 Silent E
The letter E is silent if it comes at the ends of words, it is silent.
'Silent e' words : Fore, table, before, write, give, hide.
If E occurs before the letter D in the second and third form of the verbs, E is silent.
'Silent e' words : Bored, fixed, smuggled, begged.
 Silent G
The G letter is not pronounced when it comes before N in a word.
'Silent g' words : Design, foreign, sign, gnash, align.
Exceptions: Magnet, igneous, cognitive, signature

 Silent GH
GH is not pronounced when it comes after a vowel in a word.
'Silent gh' words : High, light, thought, through alight.
Exceptions: GH is pronounced separately in compound words (As you can see in the following words that exceptions are generally compound words).
Doghouse, bighead, foghorn.
GH is sometimes pronounced like F, consider the words below : Draught, cough, laugh, tough.
 Silent H
The letter H is usually silent when it appears after W.
'Silent h' words: Why, what, when, weather, where; Sometimes the letter H is not silent after W, consider the words below: Whose, whosoever, who, whoever, whole; H is mute at the beginning of many words (should use the article “an” with unvoiced H) : Hour, honest, honour, heir.
Exceptions: Most of the words beginning with H are not silent (remember to use the article “a” with voiced H) : History, Historical, Hair, Happy.

honest : To be honest, I don't know the answer; honour : Address the judge as 'Your Honour'; ghost : Spectre is another word for ghost; ghastly :           Those curtains are so ugly I'd call them ghastly; aghast : I'm aghast at the huge rise in food prices; gherkin : A gherkin is a small pickled cucumber; ghetto : He escaped from the city ghetto and made a better life; ghoul : Ghoul is an old word for an evil spirit; rhinoceros : In some countries the rhinoceros is in danger of extinction; rhubarb : Rhubarb is her favourite fruit; rhyme :    Time, crime and chime all rhyme; rhythm : James plays rhythm guitar; vehicle : Good locks can deter vehicle theft; exhibition :    Many people visited the art exhibition; exhaust : I'm exhausted after that long run.
Silent K
The letter K is always silent when it precedes the letter N in a word.
'Silent k' words : Know, knock, knife, knight, knowledge.
Examples of k silent words:
knack : He has a great knack with magic tricks; knock : Knock hard to wake me up; knowledge : Bill has an extensive knowledge of history; knuckle : I grazed my knuckles when I fell off my bike; knot : The knot was too tight to undo; knapsack : My water bottle is in my knapsack; knee : He needs ointment on his cut knee; knit : Helen is going to knit a jacket for her sister's baby; knoll : A knoll is a small grassy hill; knob : They checked the door knob for fingerprints.
 Silent L
The letter L is usually not pronounced after the vowels: A, O and U.
'Silent l' words : Calf, half, palm, would, should, could, folk, yolk.
Example Sentences:
calm : Don’t panic, stay calm; palm : There are palm oil trees as far as you can see; half : Ten is half of twenty; calf : One of our cows recently had a calf; chalk : These cliffs are made of chalk; talk : Don't talk with your mouth full; walk                : Let's walk home through the park; folk : Folk music is popular with these students; salmon : Salmon is a healthy food; could : We could eat at home or in the burger bar; would : James would like an orange juice; should : A recording studio should be sound proof.
 Silent N
The letter N is not pronounced when it comes after M at the end of a word.
'Silent n' words : Column, damn, solemn, autumn.
Example Sentences:
autumn : The leaves turn to gold in autumn; condemn : The judge had to condemn the man to a life sentence; column      : You can't support a building with just one column; solemn : After the bad news solemn music was played; hymn : Everyone joined in the hymn singing.
 Silent P
The letter P is not pronounced at the he beginning of many words using the combinations PS, PT and PN.
'Silent p' words : Psalm, psephology, pterodactyl, pneumonia, pneumatic.
Example sentences:
pneumatic : The workman had a pneumatic drill; pneumonia : Pneumonia can be a very serious illness; psychic : The old lady had psychic powers; psychiatry : Psychiatry is the study and treatment of mental illness; psychiatrist  : The psychiatrist worked at the hospital; psychedelic : Psychedelic drugs can be dangerous as they alter the mind; psychology : My brother is studying psychology at college; psychologist : A psychologist studies the way the mind works; psychopath : The killer was found to be a psychopath; psychosis : Psychosis is a serious mental illness; psychotherapy : Her eating phobias were cured by psychotherapy; pterodactyl : Pterodactyls were flying reptiles, now extinct; pterosaur : Pterosaurs flew in the Jurassic period; ptarmigan : The ptarmigan is a brown bird living in the colder parts of Europe.
 Silent PH
PH is sometimes pronounced like F.
'Silent ph' words : Sophia, paragraph, elephant, telephone.
 Silent S
The letter S is not pronounced before L in the following words:
'Silent s' words : Aisle, island, isle, islet.
 Silent T
The letter T is not pronounced  in the following common English words:
'Silent t' words : Castle, Christmas, fasten, listen, often, beret, Chevrolet, whistle, thistle, bustle, hasten, soften, rapport, gourmet, ballet.
Example Sentences:
fasten : Fasten your shoe lace before you trip over; hasten : Jim turned up the oven heat to hasten the cooking; glisten : Frost can glisten in the sunlight; moisten : Moisten the cloth then clean the keyboard; apostle : Mark was an apostle of Christ; thistle : Thistle plants were growing among the corn; whistle : The referee blew his whistle at the end of the game; mortgage : We'll need a bigger mortgage to buy a bigger house; Christmas : Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December.
 Silent U
The letter U is not pronounced when it comes after G and before a vowel in a word.
'Silent u' words : Guide, guest, guard, guess, guano.
 Silent W
The letter W is not pronounced at the beginning of a word when it is before the letter R.
'Silent w' words: Write, wrest, wrong, wrack, wrap.
W is silent in the following words: Who, whose, whole, whom, whole, whoever, answer, sword, two.
Example sentences: wreck : There is a rusty old wreck on the reef; wren : The wren is one of the smallest birds in Britain; wrestle : We saw the policeman wrestle the burglar to the ground;  wriggle : The cave explorers had to wriggle through the tunnel; wrinkle:  Grandma says she has a new wrinkle every day; wrist :  She wore a gold bangle on her wrist; writhe : We watched the poor animal writhe in agony; wrought : The old gate is made of wrought iron;
