யாழ்ப்பாணம் போட்டு வந்தாப் பிறகு யாழ்ப்பாணி எண்டால் கடுப்பு இன்னம் கூடுதலாக இருக்கு எனக்கு.

வயது போன ஒருவரை ஐயா என்று மரியாதையாகக் கூப்பிட்டதற்கு கெக்கலி கொட்டிச் சிரிக்கினம் ஏனென்றால் அவர் குறைஞ்ச ஆளாம்!

இப்படியான சிந்தனை உள்ளவர்கள் புலத்தில அகதியாக வந்தவர்களைக் கண்டால் குறைஞ்ச ஆளாத்தான் தெரிவார்கள்..

சுண்டல் சொல்வது சரியென்றுதான் எனக்கும் படுகிறது. உண்மையான அகதிகள் திருப்பி அனுப்பப்படுவது தவறு. ஆனால், வடக்குக் கிழக்கைத் தவிர்ந்த பகுதிகளிலிருந்து அகதி என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டு வருபவர்கள்மேல் அனுதாப்ப்பட முடியவில்லை. இப்படியான பலர் பென்டெல் ஹில், வென்ற்வேத்வில் பகுதிகளில் சுற்றித்திரிவதைக் கண்டிருக்கிறேன். அவர்கள் பேசும் தமிழ் வட கிழக்குத் தமிழ்போலத் தெரியவில்லை. இப்படியானவர்களால சில மாதங்களுக்குமுன்னால் இப்பகுதிகளில் சில வன்முறைச் சம்பவங்களும் இடம்பெற்றிருக்கின்றன. மாலை நேரங்களில் இப்பகுதிகளுக்குச் சென்றால், கடைகளுக்கு முன்னால் குழுக்களாக நின்று போய்வருபவர்கள் மீது கிண்டலடிக்கும் புதிய கலாச்சாரம் வளர்ந்து வருகிறது. இதுவரை காலமும் இலங்கைத் தமிழர் என்றால் பண்பானவர்கள் என்கிற பெயர் இருந்துவந்தது. இப்போது அது மெல்ல மெல்ல மாறிவருகிறது என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

 

அடுத்த விடயம், அகதிகளாக படகில் வந்தவர்களில் எத்தனைபேர் இறந்துள்ளார்கள். இவ்வாறான இறப்புகளைத் தவிர்க்க என்ன வழி ? படகுகளை முற்றாக நிப்பாட்டி விட்டால் தடுக்கமுடியும் என்று அரசாங்கம் நினைப்பது சரிதானே??

 

உண்மையான அகதி அந்தஸ்த்துக் கோருபவர்கள் சட்டரீதியாக விண்ணப்பம் செய்து, காத்திருந்து தமது சந்தர்ப்பம் வரும்போது வருவதுதான் சரியென்று அரசாங்கம் கருதுகிறது.கியூ ஜம்பர்களைத்தான் அரசு திருப்பி அனுப்பிகிறது. நூற்றுக்கணக்கில் கடலில் மாண்டுபோவதைக் காட்டிலும், உயிர்வாழ்வது மேல் என்றுதான் நான் நினைக்கிறேன்.

நான் பலகாலமாக கூறிவந்தது போல லிபரல் அமோக வெற்றி பெற்றிருக்கிறது. அப்படிக் கூறுவதை விட லேபர் அமோகமாகத் தோல்வி அடைந்திருக்கிறது என்பதே உண்மை. கடந்த 100 வருடங்களில் இல்லாத தோல்வி எனக் கூறுகிறார்கள். பசுமைக் கட்சி லேபரின் காபன் வரிக்கு ஆதரவு தெரிவித்த காரணத்தால் இருந்த ஆதரவையும் பசுமைக் கட்சி இழந்திருக்கிறது. நேற்றைய பேச்சிலே மூன்று விடயங்களை முக்கியமாக டோனி குறிப்பிட்டிருந்தார். காபன் வரியை அடுத்த மூன்று ஆண்டுகளில் ஒழிப்பது , அவுசிட்கு வரும் படகுகளை நிறுத்துவது, நாட்டின் பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சியை அதிகரிப்பது. 

 

லிபரல் தயவு தாட்சண்யம் காட்டாத ஒரு கடும்போக்கான கட்சி. விடயங்களை வெட்டு ஒன்று துண்டு இரண்டாக முடிக்கக் கூடியவர்கள். ஈழத்தவர்கள் அதிக ஆதரவை வழங்கிய பசுமைக் கட்சிக்கு ஒரே ஒரு ஆசனம் தான் வரும் போல இருக்கிறது. சென்ற தேர்தலில் இரு பக்கமும் 72 ஆசனங்களை எடுத்திருந்தார்கள். இதனால் சிறிய கட்சியான பசுமைக்கட்சி லேபருடன் சேர்ந்து ஆட்சி அமைத்தது. இப்போது அவர்களைப் பற்றி லிபரல் கண்டு கொள்ளாது. அடுத்து வரும் கிழமைகளில் பல பொலிசி  மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்றப்படும். போன தேர்தலின் போது எனக்கு வாக்குரிமை இல்லாமல் இருந்ததால் எதையும் பற்றி பெரிதாக அலட்டிக்கொள்ளவில்லை. இந்த முறை வாக்குரிமையோடு, இரண்டு கட்சிகளின் முக்கிய பேசு பொருளான அகதிப் பிரச்சனையில் தொழில்முறையான ஈடுபாடு இருந்ததால் கொஞ்சம் விஷயம் விளங்கின மாதிரி இருந்தது. நாளை வேலை கொஞ்சம் சூடாகவே இருக்கும். வெள்ளிக்கிழமையே பலருக்கும் விடயம் ஓரளவுக்கு விளங்கியிருந்தது. வரும் மாற்றங்களை பொது வெளியில் பகிரக்கூடியவற்றை இயலுமானவரையில் கூறுவேன்.

Tony Abbott has claimed victory for the Coalition in the 2013 federal election.

Earlier Prime Minister Kevin Rudd conceded defeat and announced that he would not recontest the leadership of the Labor Party, saying it was ''time for renewal''.

Mr Abbott appeared before a jubilant crowd of supporters in Sydney.

''I can inform you that the government of Australia has changed,'' he said, before he was drowned out by the crowd.

Mr Abbott repeated his election pledges, saying the carbon tax would go, the boats would be stopped and the budget would be on track for a ''believable surplus''.

''From today, I declare that Australia is under new management and that Australia is once more open for business.''

Mr Abbott acknowledged that Mr Rudd had conceded defeat as well as his ''service''.

''I now look forward to forming a government that is competent, that is trustworthy, and which purposefully and steadfastly and methodically sets about delivering on our commitments to you, the Australian people.''

The new prime minister elect said that in a ''week or so'' Governor-General Quentin Bryce would swear in the new government.

''Today, the people of Australia have declared that the right to govern this country does not belong to Mr Rudd or to me or to his party or to ours; but it belongs to you, the people of Australia,'' Mr Abbott said.

 

'Gave it my all'

Mr Rudd said he had called Mr Abbott to congratulate him on his victory.

''I gave it my all but it was not enough for us to win,'' Mr Rudd told a crowd of cheering Labor Party supporters in Brisbane.

Mr Rudd said he was proud he had helped preserve Labor as a ''viable fighting force'' for the future.

''Ben Chifley's light on the hill will continue forever,'' he declared.

Mr Rudd told a gathering of the party faithful in Brisbane: ''I have been honoured to serve as your prime minister and as your party's leader.

''But there comes a time when you know you've given it your all and a time for the party to further renew its leadership for the future.

''For me that time is now. So I will not be recontesting the leadership of the parliamentary Labor Party.''

The Australian people deserved a ''fresh start'', Mr Rudd said.

''I know this will not be welcome news to some of you. But my responsibility has been to maintain Labor as a fighting force for the future so that we can unite behind the next leader of our party.''

Mr Rudd told the audience they would not hear his voice in public life for some time, and that was ''as it should be''. He had taken the decision with a ''heavy heart'' because he loved the Labor Party, loved the movement and loved ''the vision we have for Australia's future''.

The mood at the Labor post-election party was so buoyant that Mr Rudd had to calm down their whistling and chanting so he could begin talking.

''Kevin! Kevin! Kevin!'' they yelled.

''Jeez, I though we had lost,'' Mr Rudd said.

He said the ''miracle'' and the ''marvel'' of Australia was that there was ''more that unites us than divides us''.

Mr Rudd was less generous about his LNP opponent, Bill Glasson, whom he defeated for the seat of Griffith.

''It would be un-prime ministerial of me to say Bill Glasson, eat your heart out, so I won't,'' he said.

Mr Rudd said he and his wife Therese Rein were looking forward to greeting Mr Abbott and his wife Margie at the Lodge next week with the same generosity that John and Janette Howard welcomed his family six years ago.

He also said that as evidence of Labor's success, every sitting member of cabinet who recontested their seats had been returned.

Addressing his campaign staff, Mr Rudd said: ''For putting up with me, I thank you for that.''

Former prime minister Julia Gillard took to Twitter after Mr Rudd's concession speech to commiserate with her old colleagues.

''A tough night for Labor,'' Ms Gillard wrote. ''But a spirited fight by Kevin, Albo, George + the whole team.  My thoughts are with you all. JG''

'Rudd should leave parliament'

Outgoing defence minister Stephen Smith praised Mr Rudd's decision to resign from the leadership as the ''sensible" thing to do'' - but still called on Mr Rudd to leave Parliament.

''It is in his interests and our interests ... to leave the Parliament at some early time,'' he said.

Mr Smith said that the ''next generation'' - including Bill Shorten, Tanya Plibersek and Mark Butler - needed a chance.

''You have to strike out for the future,'' he said.

''They can't now get bogged down on who said what to who, or was it Rudd or was it Gillard's fault?''

Former minister Greg Combet said he endorsed Mr Smith's assessment that Mr Rudd should leave Parliament.

Upbeat mood despite loss

Despite a poor showing for Labor at the polls, losses in western Sydney were not as bad as expected, and Labor has so far lost just one seat in Queensland, Capricornia.

Rudd backer and Treasurer Chris Bowen, who has held on to his seat of McMahon, said Labor had done better than expected.

''Across the board it's a difficult night for the Labor Party, but compared with what we may have faced, six or 12 months ago, it's a result which I think will stand us in good stead for the next three years,'' he told ABC TV.

Mr Combet also said that the results for his party were not as bad as expected.

''The outcome seats-wise doesn't look quite as bad for us as had been anticipated," he told ABC TV.

Early Labor-held seats to fall to the Coalition were La Trobe and Corangamite in Victoria and Bass, Braddon and Lyons in Tasmania, but Labor retained Franklin in that state. The central coast NSW seat of Robertson was also a loss for Labor to the Coalition, as were the NSW seats of Page and Lindsay.

Other Labor losses included the Victorian seat of Deakin, the South Australian seat of Hindmarsh and the Northern Territory seat of Lingiari.

Coalition candidates have also won in the formerly independent-held seats of New England and Lyne. Barnaby Joyce has successfully moved from the Senate to the lower house, taking New England, the seat formerly held by Tony Windsor.

The Nationals have also held off a challenge from the Liberals in the Victorian seat of Mallee.

High-profile candidate Clive Palmer is in with a chance to win the Sunshine Coast seat of Fairfax held by retiring Coalition MP Alex Somlyay.

Mr Palmer had attracted close to 29 per cent of the vote, with more than 55 per cent of the votes counted.

Former speaker Peter Slipper has conceded the Queensland seat of Fisher, with former Howard government minister Mal Brough set to return to Parliament.

Independent Andrew Wilkie has held his seat of Denison in Tasmania with a strong swing to him despite a concerted campaign by Labor. Greens MP Adam Bandt will retain Melbourne despite the Liberal Party directing preferences away from the Greens.

In some good news for Labor, Rudd supporter Ed Husic retained his western Sydney seat of Chifley as did Michelle Rowland in Greenway against a challenge from Jaymes Diaz.

Kate Ellis retained her seat of Adelaide in South Australia.

Matt Thistlewaite has successfully moved from the Senate to retain the Sydney seat of Kingsford-Smith for Labor. He stood for the seat after former education minister Peter Garrett resigned from politics when Mr Rudd was returned to the Labor leadership.

Recriminations begin within Labor

Within five minutes of the first stations closing, senior Labor figures were publicly conceding defeat.

At 6.04pm former defence minister Stephen Smith told ABC TV that Labor had already lost and that the result could be worse than 1996, when Paul Keating lost in a landslide to John Howard.

Former prime minister Bob Hawke told Sky News the election was "lost by the government" rather than won by the opposition.

''All the evidence shows that the electorate is not madly keen about him [Tony Abbott],'' Mr Hawke told Sky News.

''The personal manipulations and pursuits of interest have dominated more than they should and in the process the concentration on values have slipped.''

Tanya Plibersek told ABC TV that it was clear the Coalition had won the day.

''I am a cautious person by nature, but I think it's pretty clear. It's a matter of the size of the victory.''

Labor's public recriminations have already begun, with outgoing Northern Territory senator Trish Crossin blaming national secretary George Wright for a poorly run campaign.

''If we see a massive defeat tonight then George Wright has to go,'' Senator Crossin wrote on Facebook.

''Worst national secretary we have had ... can't be [sic] believe the media don't look at this more closely.''

Senator Crossin was dumped from her Senate seat in January by former prime minister Julia Gillard, who installed former Olympic athlete Nova Peris in the hope of her becoming federal Labor's first indigenous representative.

ALANNAH MacTiernan, Labor's new federal figurehead in Western Australia, says she is certain the party would have been wiped off the map in the west if not for Kevin Rudd.

Ms MacTiernan said if Mr Rudd had not deposed Julia Gillard before the election, the national damage to Labor would have been a lot worse, particularly in WA.

"A lot of very smart and capable people have been returned to parliament, and it is a fighting force and a launch pad at a serious attempt at the next election," Ms MacTiernan told ABC radio.

"We will have a very strong opposition team, and given the volatility in voting patterns, we would see ourselves having a chance at the next election."

வெர்ஜீனியா ஜட்ஜ் எம் மண்ணிற்குச் சென்று நேரில் நிலமைகளைப் பார்த்து, அதன் பின் உண்மையை உணர்ந்து மனம் மாறி, ஒரு மதமாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டவன் எப்படிப் புதிய மதத்தைப் போதிப்பானோ, அந்த வெறியுடன் அவர் பார்த்த உண்மைகளை ஆஸ்திரேலிய மக்களுக்குச் சொல்லவிழைந்தார்.  அப்போது லேபர் கட்சியைச் சார்ந்த பலர், அவரை ஓரம் கட்டினார்கள், சிலர் ஒதுக்கினார்கள்.  பாராளுமன்றத்திலும் பொதுக்கூட்டங்களிலும் பேசுவது ஒன்று, ஆனால் கொள்கை அடிப்படையில் ஒன்றைச் செயல் படுத்துவது தான் அந்தச் சொற்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்படும் வலு.  அந்த வகையில், வெர்ஜீனியா ஜட்ஜ் செய்தது, பாராட்டத்தக்க செயலே.  ஆனால் அதற்காக, அவர் சார்ந்த கட்சியை ஒட்டு மொத்தமாக நம்ப வேண்டும், அவர்கள் பின் செல்ல வேண்டும் என்ற சிந்தனையில் தான் உங்கள் பார்வைக்கும் என்பார்வைக்குமிடையிலான விரிசல்.

 

க்ரீன்ஸ் கட்சியின் தற்போதைய நியூ சவுத் வேல்ஸ் உறுப்பினர் லீ ரியானன், தெற்கு ஆஸ்திரேலிய (மீண்டும் தெரிவு செய்யப்பட்ட) உறுப்பினர் சேரா ஹான்ஸன் யங் இருவரது சொற்களும் செயற்பாடுகளும் பாராட்டுதற்குரியவைதான்.  நாடாளுமன்றத் தேர்தலில், மெல்பேர்ன் நகர தொகுதியைத் தவிர அவர்கள் வேறெங்கும் வெல்வார்கள் என்று யாரும் நம்பவில்லை, எனவே அவர்கள் செயற்பாடும் அப்படியே அமைந்திருந்தது.  செனட் சபையில் அவர்கள் எம் மாநிலத்தில் ஆசனத்தைப் பெறாதது வருத்தத்திற்குரியதுதான்.  ஆனால், அதற்குக்க காரணம், தமிழர் வாக்குகள் மட்டுமல்ல.  இரண்டு பிரதான கட்சிகளும் தம் விருப்பு வாக்குகளை க்ரீன்ஸ் கட்சிக்குக் கொடுக்காமல் விட்டதே அவர்கள் ஒரு ஆசனத்தையும் பெறமுடியாமல் போனதற்கான அடிப்படைக் காரணம்.

ஜோன் மேர்ஃப்பியைப் பொறுத்தவரை, அவருடைய பாவனை நாள் (use by date) முடிவடைந்து விட்டது என்றே பலரும் கருதுகிறார்கள்.  இந்தத் தேர்தலில் போட்டியிடுவதில்லை என்று அவர் அறிவித்திருந்தார்.  லேபர் கட்சியின் உட்பூசல்களைச் சமாளிப்பதற்காகவே அவர் மீண்டும் போட்டியிட்டார் என்பது உள்வட்டக் கருத்து.  அவர் ஓரிரு முறை எமக்ககாக் குரல் கொடுத்திருந்தபோதும் அவரால் கொள்கை அடிப்படையில் எந்தவித தாக்கத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்த முடியவில்லை.  அதற்காக அவர் கெட்டவர் என்று நான் சொல்லவில்லை.  அந்தக் கட்சிக்குள் இவர் சொல் எடுபடவில்லை.  இதே வேளை, க்ரெய்க் லண்டி, லிபரல் கட்சியைச் சார்ந்தவரென்றாலும், வளர்ந்து வரும் ஒரு அரசியல்வாதி என்ற அடிப்படையில், தமிழ் அமைப்புகளை அணுகி, தம்மை வெற்றிபெற வைக்குமாறு வேண்டுகோள் விடுத்திருக்கிறார்.  சில அமைப்புகள் நேரடியாகவும், சில மறைமுகமாகவும் அவருக்கு உதவிபுரிந்திருக்கின்றன.  இதனை அவரது வெற்றியுரையில் அவரும் ஸ்கொட் மொரிசனும் வாய்விட்டு, தமிழர்களுக்கு நன்றிகூறியிருக்கின்றனர்.  விருப்பமோ இல்லையோ, லிபரல் நஷனல் கூட்டணிதான் ஆட்சியமைக்கப்போகிறது என்று தெரிந்ததால், தமிழ் அமைப்புகள் இவரூடாக ஒரு காலை அங்கு பதிப்பதில் எமக்கு நன்மை இருப்பதாகவே நான் பார்த்தேன்.  இவர் எமக்ககாக செயற்படுவாரா (குரல் கொடுத்து ஒன்றும் ஆகப் போவதில்லை, இதை முன்னர் விளக்கியிருக்கிறேன்) என்பதற்கு காலம் தான் பதில் சொல்லும்.

 

தமிழர்கள் பலர், யாரோ ஒருவன் எமக்காகக் குரல் கொடுப்பான், செயற்படுவான் என்ற எண்ணத்தில் தமது கடமையைச் செய்யாது, எதிர்பார்த்திருக்கிறார்கள்.  சின்ன உதாரணம், வெர்ஜீனியா ஜட்ஜுக்கு எதிராக சிங்கள அரசு ஏவி விட்டவர்கள் ஆயிரக்கணக்கில் முறையீட்டுக்கடிதங்களை எழுதிய அதே வேளை, எவ்வளவு கெஞ்சிக் கேட்டும், ஒட்டு மொத்தமாக வெர்ஜீனியா ஜட்ஜுக்கு ஆதரவாகக் கடிதம் எழுதியவர்கள் வெறும் இருபத்தியெட்டே தான்.  இதை யாரிடம் சொல்லியழ?

SALARY:

Backbenchers receive $127,060 a year before allowances. Ministers, office holders, heads of committees receive extra salary. The Prime Minister earns $330,356, the Deputy PM earns $260,473, the Treasurer $238,237, the Opposition Leader gets $235,061. The Remuneration Tribunal has put the next pay review on hold until September 30.

Electorate allowance. $32,000 (53 MPs with larger electorates get up to $14,000 extra). To cover costs incurred performing duties as an MP such as presentations at school speech days, buying raffle tickets, gifts to sporting clubs and community groups, senior citizens awards and other donations. MPs must keep receipts and the unspent amount is treated as taxable income.

MPs who entered Parliament before the 2004 election are required to pay 11.5 per cent of their salary into superannuation for up to 18 years and pay 5.75 per cent of their salary thereafter. On retirement they benefit from a generous nest egg based on their years of service. They can receive a lump sum or annual pension. Those who became MPs after the 2001 election must wait until age 55 to get the money.

MPs who were elected from the 2004 election onwards have a less generous scheme. The Government contributes 15.4 per cent of their gross salary into a super fund elected by the MP. Their super payout is based on the performance of the fund in the same way as most workers. Salary sacrifice is allowed.

OFFICES:

One office suite at Parliament House and an office in their electorate provided to a typical size of 175 square metres. One car space, security, signs and cleaning.

Six computers (two can be lap tops), one mobile broadband modem, two high-speed monochrome laser printers, one colour laser printer, one colour scanner, one smart label printer. 24-hour, 7 days a week IT support help desk.

Office furniture, postage meter machine, high-speed photocopier, collator, folding & envelope machine, document shredder, TV, dishwasher and office stationery.

COMMUNICATIONS:

Printing allowance of $100,000 a year for Reps, $16,667 a year for senators for personalised stationery, newsletters, certificates, fridge magnets, postal vote applications and voting information.

Communications allowance to cover postage and costs of creating and maintaining a web site. Worth $27,500 a year for senators and about $40,000 a year for lower house members (50 cents for every enrolled voter in electorate).

Also given $1800 a year worth of stamps for their office at Parliament House.

Four telephones in the office, fax and answering machine.

Taxpayer-funded phone line, fax and answering machine at home.

Two mobile phones (one can be a Blackberry). Hands-free car kit on request for their private car.

Phone numbers called by MPs are not listed on the bills paid by taxpayers.

A Post Office box at the nearest Post Office.

1300 toll free telephone number if their electorate covers more than one STD area.

TRAVEL IN AUSTRALIA:

Flights: No limit on number of business-class commercial flights. MPs who use charter flights when there is a commercial flight available must pay the difference.

Car with driver: COMCAR at their service when they are in Canberra, interstate on official business or to travel to and from the airport in their home city.

Private-plated vehicle: Every MP given a car from a list (typically a Holden, Ford or Toyota). MPs pay $711 a year and taxpayers pay all costs, including petrol, registration and servicing. Can be used for private and family reasons and can be driven by a staff member or family member.

MPs can choose to not have a car and get an allowance of $19,500 a year to pay for public transport and taxis.

Charter flights: Depending on the size of their electorate, MPs can spend between $9450 and $79,475 a year on charter flights or cars. Can be used by the MP, spouse or staff member.

VIP flights: can be used by MPs if approved by the government.

Family Reunion Travel: To balance work and family, MPs are given an annual budget worth nine business class return trips to Canberra from their home for their spouse or nominee, which can include a nanny, and three business class return trips for each dependent child. Spouses also get three business class return interstate trips (not to Canberra).

Travel allowance: to cover cost of accommodation, meals and other expenses when away from home overnight. When in Canberra, MPs get a flat $215 a night with no requirement to produce receipts. Some MPs use it to pay for a hotel room, others use it to pay rent or put it towards the mortgage on a second property. For other towns and cities MPs get between $215 and $437.

In Sydney the rate is $324 a night, in Brisbane its $352. Ministers receive a higher allowance. Apart from Canberra, MPs get the full rate if stay in commercial accommodation and get a receipt. If they stay elsewhere they can claim one-third of the rate.

OVERSEAS TRAVEL:

Study tour: After three years MPs get to spend the equivalent of an around-the-world first class airfare on overseas study tours. No limit on number of trips within the price range. They can downgrade to business class and take their spouse (and sometimes are then upgraded by the airline). They receive new entitlement every three years. They must lodge a written report which is tabled in Parliament.

Parliamentary delegations: MPs can also be selected by the Presiding Officers to go on overseas delegations to represent the Parliament. All costs are covered and they can take their spouse.

Official travel: Ministers, Presiding officers and Opposition leaders travel overseas on official business. Other MPs can sometimes be selected to represent them.

Travel gifts: MPs can also accept overseas travel gifts but must declare it on the register of pecuniary interests.

STAFF:

Average backbench MP can employ 4 full-time staff who earn between $39,635 and $67,034. Staff can also be paid an electorate allowance, travel allowance and receive economy-class airfares for official travel.

OTHER:

Constituent requests: MPs can give away an unlimited number of large Australian flags to eligible bodies such as schools and up to 50 large flags to private individuals. They can give away up to $900 a year worth of desktop or hand-waver flags. They must keep a list of who receives flags.

MPs also can give constituents photographs of the Queen and Prince Phillip, a CD or DVD of the national anthem, a print of the Coat of Arms and information about national symbols and awards.

MPs can have two photographic sessions a year with the official government photographer to have their portrait taken.

MPs have a small budget to buy newspapers and magazines.

RETIREMENT:

MPs qualify for the Life Gold Pass of free business or first class airline travel within Australia with their spouse if they have served for 20 years as a backbencher or six years as a minister or one year as PM. Those who were ministers before 1973 need to serve only one term to qualify. Spouses of MPs who qualified before 1976 also qualify. No limits on those who qualified before 1994. Those who qualified after 1994 are restricted to 50 flights (or 25 return trips) a year.

MPs who do not qualify for the Life Gold Pass receive the severance travel package providing up to 50 flights (25 return trips a year) for between six months and five years after they have left Parliament depending on their length of time as an MP.

MPs who lose their seat get paid a resettlement allowance of 12-weeks pay for involuntary retirement.

Ex-MPs can use Commonwealth Offices in capital cities for six months following retirement.

GIFTS:

MPs are allowed to accept gifts, such as bottles of Grange, tickets to sporting events, flight upgrades, pay TV subscription, but must declare those valued at more than $300 on the register of interests.

NB:

* can only be used for parliamentary, electorate or official business. Not for commercial purposes.

* MPs with large electorates get extra staff, extra office equipment, a 4WD with a satellite phone and emergency radio beacon, extra travel allowance and an increased charter allowance.
