SHOCKED BY PREMEDITATED MURDER OF A TAMIL POLITICAL LEADER
We are deeply shocked by the premeditated murder of Mr Kausalyan, the head of LTTE’s Batticaloa-Amparai political division on 7th February. Four others traveling with Mr. Kausalyan were also killed. This includes, Mr. Chandra Nehru, a Human rights activist and a former parliamentarian, also the founder member of the North East Secretariat On Human Rights (NESHOR) who has worked tirelessly in exposing human rights violations in the East. The others killed were all unarmed members of the LTTE engaged in tsunami related rehabilitation work.
It is significant that the massacre took place between the Sri Lankan Military complexes at Welikanda and Punani and that the perpetrators were dressed in Sri Lankan army uniforms.
Killings of Tamil intellectuals, Tamil media persons and activists have been carried out in recent times in the East and most of them have occurred in the vicinity of Sri Lankan Army camps.
Mr Kausalyan and others who were travelling with him were engaged in tsunami related relief and rehabilitation work being carried out in the Eastern districts of Amparai and Batticaloa. The army was notified of their presence in keeping with the practice of informing in advance whenever members of the LTTE travel across Government Controlled areas.
We are concerned that these killings are a serious violation of the Cease-Fire Agreement now in place between the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
We have grave fears that unless the international community exercises its considerable influence to impress upon the Sri Lankan regime to end such massacres, the cease-fire may not hold out much longer.
We welcome the condemnation of this atrocity by the UN Secretary General, Mr Koffi Annan and call upon the Australian Government to also strongly denounce these dastardly killings.
