The 10 Most Beautiful Towns in Switzerland

For a relatively small, landlocked country, Switzerland contains an exceptional amount of natural beauty and cultural diversity – with four official languages and all the variety they represent. These 10 towns spread across the country demonstrate the best Switzerland has to offer in terms of spectacular mountain scenery, flower-lined nature paths, lakefront beauty and picturesque historic centres.

Bern

Framed by the Aare River, the charming old town of Bern is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, known for its medieval arcades and its many 16th century fountains that feature painted figures, including the curious ‘Child Eater’ fountain. The capital of Switzerland is not only a medieval architectural gem, but also boasts one of the world’s biggest collections of the artist Paul Klee, housed in the Zentrum Paul Klee – designed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano.

Guarda

Set 1,650 metres above sea level in the Lower Engadine mountains of the Graubünden canton, Guarda is a tiny remote village whose beautifully painted 17th century houses have been renovated, earning it the Wakker Prize for preservation of its architectural heritage. The setting of the famous children’s book Schellen-Ursli by Selina Chönz and Alois Carigiet, Guarda has also preserved traditional customs like the Chalandamarz event in March. The majority of the town’s population still speak Romansch – Switzerland’s fourth official language after German, French, and Italian.

Interlaken

As its name suggests, Interlaken is positioned between two lakes – Lake Thun and Lake Brienz – and surrounded by some of Switzerland’s tallest peaks, thus making it a place for stunning views in every direction. It is also the perfect base from which to enjoy the natural splendours of the country, either lakeside or in the many hiking paths that begin at Harder Kulm, a panoramic viewpoint at 1,322 metres that is accessible by funicular. And since Interlaken lies in the heart of the Bernese Oberland, the big peaks of the region – Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau – are also accessible for a closer look via the trains of the Alpine railways.

Lucerne

Located in central Switzerland, Lucerne is a picturesque ancient town on Lake Lucerne best enjoyed on foot, where you can stroll along prettily painted historic houses such as those in the central Weinmarkt Square. There are also a number of notable medieval landmarks like the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), one of Europe’s oldest covered bridges, or Musegg Wall, an intact part of the town’s rampart walls built in 1386. Yet, the city does also have a modern side, exemplified by the architecturally impressive KKL (Culture and Convention Centre) designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, and breathtaking alpine terrain remains easily accessible by cableways up to the Pilatus, Rigi or Stanserhorn mountains.

Montreux

Montreux is a lovely resort situated on a long expanse of Lake Geneva in the French-speaking southwest part of the country. The quays of Montreux offer miles of lakeside strolling, surrounded by exotic flowers and trees and framed by beautiful views of the Alps in the background. The town also boasts a 13th century castle – Château de Chillon – that juts dramatically out into the lake, originally built by the House of Savoy and later inspiring literary works by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Lord Byron. The cultural offerings are equally impressive, hosting the Montreux Jazz Festival in early July – the second largest annual jazz festival in the world.

Morcote

An easy trip from Lugano, pleasantly accomplished by ferry, Morcote is the prettiest town along Lake Lugano’s shoreline. The tiny former fishing village is set into a hillside that offers charming alleys to explore as well as lovely vistas of the lake below, with the bell tower of its historic Santa Maria del Sasso Church towering over the town. The ambiance reflects its location in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, and its Parco Scherrer offers an exotic assortment of Mediterranean and Asian flora and architectural touches like Greek sculptures, an Egyptian temple, and even a Siamese tea house, not to mention panoramic views.

Soglio

Located in the southern canton of Graubünden, where German, Romansh, and Italian are all spoken, Soglio is a beautiful little village tucked up in the mountains. It features charming cobblestone streets and the landmark Church of St. Lorenzo towering over the town, while its historic hotel, Palazzo Salis, exudes a true Mediterranean feel with its magnificent rose garden and towering sequoia trees. But the town’s highlight is surely a walk along the Via Panoramica, a path that travels through a romantic landscape of vibrant wildflowers for which the area is known.

Stein am Rhein

Just what one imagines when conjuring an idea of the perfectly quaint Swiss village, Stein am Rhein’s pedestrian centre is a dense collection of well-preserved medieval structures, many of them with exquisitely painted colourful facades. Nicknamed the ‘Jewel on the Untersee,’ situated at the point where Lake Constance becomes the Rhine River in the eastern canton of Schaffhausen, Stein am Rhein boasts a medieval hilltop castle (Castle Hohenklingen) with a bird’s eye view of the walled town below, and a former Benedictine abbey (St. George) founded in the 11th century that is currently being transformed into a museum.

Wengen

A postcard-perfect mountain village accessible only by train, Wengen is situated on a protected sunny terrace near some of the tallest peaks in the country. The village itself is home to a number of timber houses, chalets, and belle époque hotels, making for an idyllic base from which to explore the surrounding mountains. Visitors can venture out along one of the many walking trails or take one of the cableways leading to panoramic viewpoints. For the more adventurous, thrilling sports like paragliding and river rafting can also be sought out.

Zermatt

The car-free resort town of Zermatt is the highest in Europe, guaranteeing a long ski season, including year-round skiing on Zermatt’s glacier. The town lies at the base of the famous Matterhorn, where lifts ascend 3,883 metres to reveal expansive Alpine views. In addition to a charming town centre, Zermatt is also quite the hot culinary destination, with two Michelin-starred restaurants in 2015: Le Capri in the Mont Cervin Palace, run by chef Salvatore Elefante, and chef Ivo Adam’s After Seven at the Backstage Hotel. In 2015, the Matterhorn celebrated the 150-year anniversary of the first ascent to the summit in 1865, with the town hosting a number of special events.

10 of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland

Cobbled streets and fairytale castles, decorated fountains and frescoed houses. It's not hard to find such delights in many Swiss towns, largely thanks to centuries of neutrality. No cannons, no tanks, no getting caught in the crossfire, all of which means that almost every Swiss town, and city, has an unspoilt medieval heart. So which are the best to visit?

Sometimes the best things come in small packages, so rather than sticking to the big-name attractions like Lucerne or Montreux why not head out and discover small-town Switzerland. Here are ten enchanting towns, each with far fewer than 10,000 inhabitants, which can be reached in an easy day-trip from either Geneva or Zurich (or both in most cases). Any one of them makes for a perfect day by train or car.

Five towns within two hours of Geneva

Gruyères
Where the cheese comes from! Stand in the sloping main square of Gruyères and you could be forgiven for thinking you're on a Hollywood film set. Yes, it is that picture-perfect, complete with a brooding castle at the top of the town. This isn't off the beaten track at all, but despite the crowds it's definitely worth it, especially if you arrive early. And be sure to indulge in a cheesy lunch while you're here.

Gruyeres Square

Gruyeres Square

Estavayer-le-Lac
This is exactly one of those towns that many people rush past in their haste to reach somewhere else. Estavayer sits on the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, the largest lake completely within Switzerland, with views across to the Jura mountains. An imposing Savoyard castle guards the bluff overlooking the lake, and within the former town walls are a host of atmospheric cobbled streets and squares.

Estavayer Castle

Estavayer Castle

Murten
It would be hard to find a more complete small town. Not only are the encircling walls almost intact but you can walk along the ramparts and gaze across the rooftops. Plus there's a splendid gate with clock tower, a main street of arcaded buildings, the obligatory cobbles and all set beside a pretty lake. What more could you want? Oh and it's bilingual too – known as Morat in French.

Murten

Murten

St-Ursanne
Is this the prettiest small town in Switzerland? It's certainly the smallest one in this list, with barely a thousand residents, and definitely one for the quaint-hearted. And it packs a lot into a small space: alongside the usual array of medieval houses and streets are an elegant 12th-century church and cloister, and chunky town gates. The location beside the River Doubs simply adds to the romance.

St-Ursanne

St. Ursanne

Porrentruy
Most likely this is one town that many Swiss people might struggle to place on a map. It's tucked up in the northwestern corner of the country, almost in France, and not really on the way to anywhere. It has a very authentic air about it, with a Gallic flair to its genteel buildings and a sturdy castle. Truly an unmanicured and unhurried spot to escape the crowds.

Porrentruy

Five towns within two hours of Zurich

Stein am Rhein
If muralled buildings are your thing, then this little town on the German border will blow you away. Walking round the historic centre, you'll be amazed that almost every other house is decorated with elaborate frescoes or sgraffiti paintwork. Those that aren't still manage to fit in with half-timbered walls or gabled roofs. It's a popular spot, but the banks of the River Rhine are the place to find some peace.

Stein am Rhein Square

Stein am Rhein square

Lenzburg
There are castles and then there are Castles, with a big C. And Schloss Lenzburg is definitely one of the latter. It's a medieval medley of turrets, gates and courtyards that could have been created by the Brothers Grimm. At its feet is the charming town centre, not full of angry townspeople (as the Grimms would have had) but instead an attractive array of fine-looking buildings.

Lenzberg

Lenzberg

Appenzell
If Disney could create its Switzerland, then it would probably look like Appenzell. Except this is real. In the middle of the rolling green hills that make up Switzerland's smallest canton is the tiny cantonal capital, population 6,000. It's almost too pretty for its own good, with brightly painted wooden houses, narrow lanes, and inviting squares. This is about as traditional as Switzerland gets.

Appenzell

Willisau
An archetypal Swiss town centre has a wide main street lined with handsome buildings, and topped and tailed by impressive town gates. That is Willisau to a T. At the western end is the Obertor, a chunkier version of the refined Untertor at the opposite end of the small-but-grand street. And in between the two are more pretty buildings than you can shake a stick at.

Willisau

Willisau

Rapperswil
The best way to arrive in Rapperswil is by boat from Zurich, at the other end of the lake. The closer you chug, the more impressive it gets, with the pointed towers of the castle and church crowning the skyline. Huddled around the castle hill is the lovely old town with its car-free centre and lakeside promenade. Take a stroll then sit and enjoy an ice cream in the sun. Swiss bliss.
