1997 : Five Sri Lankan soldiers were killed today when the LTTE simultaneously attacked an army post and a roadblock at Padaviya, east of Vavuniya. Sri Lankan troops fled from the scene without resistance leaving the dead behind. The LTTE suffered no casualities and captured rifles, pistols and other accessories. The Padaviya positions attacked were part of a string of army camps strategically placed by Sri Lanka to create a physical barrier between northern Tamil territories and eastern ones. Tamils of the area had been forcibly evicted and Sinhala colonies installed in their place so that the Tamil nation's historical homeland would be obscured. Sri Lanka has implemented a policy of Sinhala colonisation for decades.

Occupying Sinhalese armed forces have destroyed over 200,000 coconut trees in occupied Jaffna. A report says the trees have been destroyed since 1995. The trees have mainly been used for army bunkers or cut down to satisfy the military's security interests.

1997 : The attack on the SLAF Base in China Bay caused a loss of more than Rs. 125 million with the Chinese-built Harbin Y12 aircraft being destroyed, the over-running of the Vavunativu Army Camp (which was later recaptured) led to the deaths of over 75 soldiers. More than 70 soldiers were wounded, some of them seriously. What is strongly believed to be artillery fire, fell on the Three Brigade Headquarters in Batticaloa killing two women soldiers and a Police Constable. Six Policemen were wounded. LTTE captured much hi-tech equipment including a 50-calibre gun. A rescue effort from Batticaloa's main army camp ended in disaster for Sri Lankan troops. In the entire incident LTTE casualties amounted to 84, including the death of Lt Col. Mathana (commander of the Batticaloa-Amparai women's' brigade) and Lt. Col. Palendra (commander of the Vinodhan brigade).

 

1998 : LTTE forces today ambushed Sinhalese occupying armed forces between Nayinamadu and Mathiyamadu on the Puliyankulam-Mullaitivu road (Tamil Eelam), killing five Sri Lankan soldiers. The tractor on which the soldiers were travelling was also completely destroyed. LTTE forces did not suffer any casualties.

Shells fired from Elephant Pass army camp have landed on a family home in Nallur (Pooneryn) killing a man and badly injuring another. Tamil residents had returned to Pooneryn in 1996 after Sri Lanka removed its long-standing army camp from there.

1997 Relatives of 27 Tamil youths who disappeared after being arrested by Sri Lankan army last July have been turned away by military authorities. The young men were taken away from Thatchanthoppu and Navatkuli during a massive cordon and search operation.

1996A 45-year-old woman was raped by soldiers

On 7 March 1996, a 45-year-old woman was raped by soldiers at Thiyavedduwan checkpoint. Her husband was beaten with rifle butts. Both were admitted to Valaichchenai hospital. Following a complaint by several people of Thiyavedduwan at Valaichchenai army camp, an identification parade was held and the soldiers were identified and taken into custody by the military police. It is not known whether any further action has been taken against them." (Amnesty International Report, September 1996)

A person who was arrested by the Sri Lankan Police yesterday in Batticaloa was found dead in his cell. Sources in the eastern town said there is reason to suspect Police torture was the reason for the death.

The skeletal parts and skeletons of twenty three bodies have so far been found in the stadium grave in Jaffna town said investigators. A metal bangle, two knives, one large and one small and three cartridges were recovered from the pit alongside the skeletons by the JMO Dr.Sri Rajeswaran today.

1997 : LTTE units intercepted soldiers in Vadamaradchy (Jaffna peninsula) on Saturday killing two. The soldiers were 100 metres from the Thunnalai Yakkarai army camp when the attack happened. There were no LTTE casualties.

1997 : Five inmates of a Trincomalee refugee camp were arrested and not seen since. these are returnees from India between 1992 and 1996. Facilities in these camps are extremely poorand conditions degrading. This happend in Trincomalee.

1998 : LTTE forces today foiled a three-pronged Sri Lankan army advance to Mankulam. Sinhalese forces tried to move on three fronts from Olumadu, Mannankulam and Munrumurripu, but LTTE forces confronted and defeated the army advances on all three fronts. The LTTE recovered five bodies of Sri Lankan soldiers, while many more troops were severely injured. Some arms and ammunition were captured including two PKLMGs and three AKLMGs. Four LTTE fighters died in this operation. Sporadic fighting is continuing in these places.

1997 : Two Tamil women shot dead in Vavuniya by SLA
Two Tamil women in their early twenties have been found gunned down on a roadside in Vavuniya within range of the Sri Lankan army camp. The bodies of Kumaraswamy Sujitha (aged 24) and Mekanathan Jeyasutha (aged 22) were sighted on the Vavuniya Town Road, close to the camp. Sujitha was originally from Neervelly North (Jaffna) while Jeyasutha was from Rampaikulam (Vavuniya). Several more bullet-struck bodies have been discovered in army-controlled Vavuniya in the past two weeks.
