Muslim policemen and homeguards have run amok in a Tamil village, killing at least 8 civilians. The surviving residents of the "4th colony" village, Amparai district, have fled the area. The attack is believed to have been carried out in reprisal for the killing of two Muslim homeguards. The 4th Colony has been sealed off by members of the Special Task Force, a police commando unit, which controls the area where the massacre took place.

More than 95 Tamil civilians including several children and women were hacked to death and at least another 5 people were burnt alive by Sri lankan soldiers and Muslim homeguards. There were no action taken against this barberic action!

2000:Conditions deteriorate for Tamil masses in Jaffna

Civilians in the Vanni district at Killinochchi claim to have found over 45 bodies within the precincts of the former army camp at Killinochchi. A large number of the bodies they say have been found in pits within the forward defence localities of the armed forces camp. The army camp at Killinochchi fell to the LTTE in September 1998.

1997 : LTTE forces early this morning crushed a Sri Lankan military advance from Palayawadi to Puliyankulam, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. Two Sri Lankan battle-tanks were completely destroyed, leaving Sri Lankan troops to drag away two other heavily-damaged battle-tanks during their retreat. LTTE forces captured one armoured troop carrier with a 73mm gun fitted, in perfect condition. Arms and ammunition was also captured. According to Sunday Times(Aug 24, 1998), more than 60 soldiers were killed and seven more were missing in action and more than 360 have been wounded .
2000 : Fighting broke out in Nakar Kovil on the south-eastern coast of Jaffna Thursday evening. Sri Lanka Army sources in the northern town said a MI-24 helicopter gunship was shot down around 5.30 p.m.
2000 : The Liberation Tigers said Thursday that they had overrun Sri Lanka Army forward defence lines protecting the key base at Nakarkovil in the heavy fighting which broke out this morning. They also said they shot down a Sri Lanka Air Force helicopter gunship and damaged another.

"The combat formations of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) over-ran several front defence lines of the heavily fortified Nagarkovil military base in the eastern coast of the Jaffna Peninsula today inflicting heavy casualties on the Sri Lanka government troops. A Russian made MI 24 helicopter gunship was destroyed and another MI 24 helicopter was badly damaged in the heavy fighting.
"Supported by heavy artillery and mortar fire the LTTE's armed units launched a massive offensive assault as a continuation of the Operation Unceasing Waves 4 on the Nagarkovil military base situated along the eastern coastal belt about 20 kilometres from Elephant Pass. Fierce fighting erupted in the early hours of the morning and continued all day.
"According to reports from the battlefield more than one hundred troops have been killed and over three hundred injured in the fighting.
"Five Sri Lankan military personnel, including the Gunners and pilots were killed when an MI 24 helicopters was brought down by anti-aircraft missile. LTTE's field commanders say that intense fighting continues tonight."
2000 : Senior Jaffna journalist, Mylvaganam Nimalrajan, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Sri Lanka Army's high security zone in Jaffna town Thursday night around 10 p.m.. His father Sangarapillai Mylvaganam, 65, his mother, Lilly Mylvaganam, 62, and his nephew, Jegathas Prasanna, 11, were seriously wounded by a grenade lobbed by the gunmen.
Mr.Nimalrajan was the Jaffna correspondent for the Tamil daily Virakesari and the popular Sinhala weekly, Ravaya. He was also a regular contributor to the BBC's Tamil and Sinhala services. His colleagues in Jaffna said that they suspected a pro-government group's involvement in the shooting. His house is close to a Sri Lanka Army sentry.

It is estimated that some 14,000 children between year 2 and year 5 are not being sent to classes because parents feel the peninsula is neither safe enough under military rule, nor are there any facilities available for children since the army occupation began. Under the indigenous LTTE administration of Jaffna, educational facilities for the very young were plentiful and special educational care was provided to children of these ages.

The Palayawadi front also tried to break forward today but was pushed back due to LTTE resistance. Troops remain pinned down at Palayawadi. 1997 : Seven Sri Lankan troops were killed today at 7.30 am in Moravakanda (Batticaloa district) where they were engaged in barricading a road in occupied Tamil territory. Moravakanda is a key strategic point next to Welikanda on the Polanaruwa-Batticaloa road. The bodies of 4 troops were recovered by the LTTE. The LTTE incurred no casualties. A substantial quantity of arms and ammunition was captured by the LTTE.

A farmer was killed in Vanthaarumoolai, 22 kilometers north of Batticaloa, around noon Sunday when he was hit by gun fire from a Sri Lanka army camp nearby. Meanwhile, a young girl has been reported missing since August 17 in Valvettithurai in Jaffna.

1997 : Bomber victim dies in hospital
A Tamil lady, Mrs. Kunasingam Sarojadevi (35), who was critically injured by a Sri Lankan Kfir bombing raid last week has died in hospital, five days after the incident. She was a resident of Puthuvilankulam, a residential Tamil area which was subject to numerous bombing raids this month.
1998 : Amnesty slams governments over refugees
Amnesty International, the human rights watchdog has criticised the governments of Guinea Conakry, Sri Lanka, Canada and the United States for their roles in the deportation of 192 Tamil refugees seekers whose boat was intercepted by the Senegalese navy on 24 February. The refugees "were all returned to Sri Lanka where they were arrested and held in detention for several weeks" said Amnesty.
1997 : Sinhala Troops Shoot-To-Kill In Jaffna
Two Tamil farmers who went to water their plants early in the morning in Kaithady (Thenmaradchy, Jaffna) were shot dead by occupying Sinhalese soldiers as they fled in fear from an approaching army patrol. The farmers - like most Tamils in Jaffna - were scared of being taken away to army camps and tortured or killed, and therefore chose to leave before the army patrol reached them. But the soldiers wasted no time opening fire on the men, killing both instantly. One of the dead has been identified as Mailavaganam Thavapalan (37) of Kaithady north. Sri Lankan troops in army-occupied Tamil areas like Jaffna operate a shoot-to-kill policy against Tamils. Soldiers are not held accountable for their actions.

Sinhalese armed forces have sliced to death a Christian priest who was gathering roofing leaves in Murippu (Kilinochchi). The parish priest - Arudpalan (42) - formerly from Karainagar (Jaffna) was attacked by soldiers wielding knives. He had been missing since the 25th of August but his mutilated body has now been discovered. Documents of his identity were found by his side. Arudpalan was a priest of the Church of South India which is conducting yeoman service to the displaced persons of Vanni, irrespective of religious affiliations.

One Sri Lankan battle-tank was completely destroyed while two more were badly damaged and had to be dragged away by retreating troops. 9 LTTE fighters lost their lives.
1998:'Soldiers shot my children' - father
"Both of my children, Kokularajani (09) and Anurajani (10), went for special church service on the evening of August 21. I learnt at around 5:30 p.m. that my children had been shot while returning home, and since it was dark and a state of tension prevailed in the area, I was only able reach the spot the following morning. I identified my daughter, Kokularajani's dead-body", narrated the father, Mr. I. Somarathinam, in his testimony during an inquiry on the death of Kokularajani at Valachenai Karuvankerney.

The Sri Lankan military shot dead Veerasingam Sellamuthu (56) of Manipay, Sankuvely (Valigamam, Jaffna) on the 26th August. The military was engaged in an extensive round-up of the area when they became irritated with the lady for not coming out of her house fast enough for the interrogation.
1996 :Vyramuthu Sriskantharajah [ 45 M from Savalakadai, Amparai ]
One civilian was killed and another severely wounded when they were forced to clear land mines, at gun point, by Sri Lankan army soldiers.

Kancheepuram, Sept 2: Sri Lankan refugees lodged in the refugee camp at Chengalpattu, on a hunger strike for the past four days to press their demands, ended their stir yesterday following an assurance from the Collector and deputy superintendent of police that action would be taken on their demands within a week.

round-up of Thirukadaloor (Trincomalee) last week. Ledchumykanthan Thamayanthan (23) died after being fired at indiscriminately by the troops. Several others were also wounded in the unprovoked gunfire at the defenceless man. The parents of the deceased were arrested on the spot and the officer-in-charge of the round-up operation asked them to sign a document saying their son was a member of the LTTE. When the parents refused, they were threatened with death. The crowds at this point raised cries of protest and soldiers responded by firing several shots into the air. But the people refused to budge. Troops became a little anxious at this point and left the scene, leaving behind the body of the man they had killed.
