1997 : The advanced military capability of the LTTE was evidenced yet again when its forces intercepted and today killed 27 Sri Lankan troopers attached to the Pulmoddai camp. The soldiers were patrolling towards 14th Mile Post. 6 LTTE fighters died. The attack - which lasted 25 minutes - came just days after 15 Sri Lankan troops and 4 armed homeguards were killed. A week before that, 325 Sri Lankan soldiers were killed at Thandikulam. The LTTE is trying to evict Sinhala armed forces who are militarily occupying Tamil-inhabited lands.

1996 : Another non-violent protest and appeal from government civil servants requesting the President to allow them to work in Vanni to help serve the needs of the IDP. Nearly all the Jaffna population are in fact in the Vanni. People are fearful of returning to army-occupied Jaffna due to reports of gross human rights violations there, not officially reported but heard about through community grapevines.

1999 : Batticaloa marks day against torture
The International Day in support of Victims of Torture is to be observed in the eastern town of Batticaloa on June 26 with a cultural pageant. Four organisations are co-ordinating the pageant and public meeting to be held on the same day.

30 old people have died in the refugee camp at the school(St Patricks College, Jaffna), due to lack of food and medical care according to a Catholic Priest. Liberating of this area by the SL Government have not saved their lives as the SL military and the Government ensure a severe hardship inflicted on the Tamil people because of their aspiration to be free people

1997 :
These Tamil civilians were travelling from Batticaloa to Colombo. Sri Lankan Sinhala police ordered the bus to stop, shouted at the Tamil passengers to dismount and the six were arrested arbitrarily. Since then no news about them from the Sinhala Police forces.

1997 :
LTTE forces have dealt a devastating blow to the "head" of Sri Lanka's army column which is advancing through Vanni. In the attack beginning 9.30pm yesterday, the army's entire 120mm artillery base at Periamadu was wiped out together with its surrounding security zones. The immaculate operation secured for the LTTE one 120mm artillery piece, 300 artillery shells and the lower vehicular segments of five more artillery pieces. A number of armoured vehicles and small arms were also captured before LTTE forces withdrew.

More than 100 Sri Lankan troops have been killed with a further 200 soldiers severely injured. 85 LTTE fighters lost their lives.

1998 : Co-operative societies write to president on teh food crisis in Vanni
In an urgent letter addressed to the Sri Lankan president, the Kilinochchi confederation of co-operative societies have accused the pro-government Tamil groups - PLOTE, TELO and EPRLF - of playing a major part in creating food crises in Vanni where hundreds of thousands of Tamil people are starving. However the primary cause of the crisis is due to the government imposing an economic blockade on the Tamil region, the letter added.

1997 : A hindu temple damages - 6 children injured
Six Tamil children - the youngest 12 years - are seriously injured after army shelling of a Hindu temple on Monday. The artillery attack came at 8.15 in the evening while the children were engaged in devotions. Sri Lanka's assault was launched from its military camps at Mankindimalai and targeted at Kumulamunai Kottukinattady Nagathambiran temple. The temple itself was badly damaged. The children injured are: Koinath (male, 12); S. Piratheepan (male, 16); Pirahalathan (male, 14); Sasikumar (male, 16); Vijitha (female, 16); Menaka (female, 18).

1998 : SL soldiers gang rape and kill Tamil woman in Jaffna
On June 25, the Sri Lankan soldiers killed a 26-year old unmarried Tamil woman in Miruisuvil after having gang raped her. The army chief from the local Mirusuvil army camp had ordered the woman, Kanthasamy Kalanithy, to stand infront of 10 Sri Lankan soldiers and to choose one soldier to marry. When the woman refused to respond he ordered one of the soldiers to put a poottu on her forehead to singnify his marrige to her. When the woman screamed in protest, she was gang raped by the soldiers and killed. The military also refused to hand her body to a doctor for examination. The army has threatned the parents of the woman not to let others know of what happened

1998 : Army tortures Tamils in Vavuniya
Three Tamil residents who went to the shrub jungles of Puthur to hunt for food have been arrested and severely tortured by the occupying Sinhalese armed forces. The civilians - Kasinathan Gunalingam, Varithamby Ponnampalam, and Francispillai Angelo - all from Kunchukulam were arrested on June 25 and taken to the Sinhala army camp in Vavuniya where they were mercilessly tortured. They were released after the intervention of the Red cross society.

1997 : School books denied to Tamil children
Sri Lanka's education department has kept back 60% of the school books it is obliged to give to Tamil school children in Mullaitivu. Even the small amount that has arrived has come half a year too late, rendering the scheme virtually meaningless. Headmasters and teachers are in a quandary about how to distribute the meagre supply among the hard-done children. The Sri Lankan government, while professing to be ethnically-neutral, routinely withholds items - even those donated by international agencies - from the Tamil people.

1998 : LTTE anti-aircraft units on Friday shot down a Sri Lankan Mi24 helicopter gunship over Puthumurippu, a hamlet one kilometre off the military airport at Vavuniya. Sri Lankan military helicopters and planes are known to attack Tamil settlements which has caused the deaths of hundreds of Tamil civilians including women and children. The helicopter gunship was downed at 8.30 AM. All four airforce personnel on board were killed. The ill-fated helicopter gunship often described as a 'flying battle tank' was reduced to cinders when it burst into flames after hitting the ground. Another Mi24 flying by its side escaped.

1998 : LTTE forces attacked a para-military police patrol unit in Uyilankulam, Mannar on June 27. Three Sinhala policemen were killed. LTTE fighter Kalki died in this attack.

1998 : Mass protest march in Mallavi
Thousands of Tamils marched in Mallavi yesterday condemning persistent Sinhala military attack on civilians and civilian habitations. Placards asking the Sinhala President to stop targeting civilians were carried by the marchers while some directly accused International Institutions of aiding the genocide on Tamils by providing generous loans to the Sri Lankan government. Two petitions, one addressed to the ICRC's residential representative and to the UN Secretary-General were handed over at the end of the protest march.

1998 : Sri Lankan War Planes Bomb Tamil Village Killing 3 Civilians
Sri Lankan Kfir war planes on Saturday bombed the Tamil village of Konavil (Vanni) killing 3 Tamil civilians including a 7-year old child and injuring 6 others. Immediately after the planes left, Sinhalese soldiers from the Elephant pass army camp fired long range artillery into the village. Details of those killed are: M Rajeepan, 7, M Jeyalachumi, 30 (both from the same family), and Thirunavukarasu Parasakthy.

The bodies of thirty four Tamil civilians, including a woman were found in the jungle near Thampalakamam in the Trincomalee district. The victims had apparently been abducted by Home Guards (Sinhalese civilians armed by the Sri Lankan government).

1986 : Paranthan farmers executed - 10 killed
Sri Lankan security forces personnel tied eight Tamil civilians and executed them in the course of a cordon and search operation in Paranthan on 28 June 1986.

2000 : Drug shortage hits Vanni hospital
Hospitals in the Vanni region are experiencing shortage of drugs and other medical equipment as they are yet to receive the entire supply approved by the Defence Ministry, for the first quarter of this year, government officers and medical sources said. They said the remaining supplies for the hospitals are lying in Vavuniya, awaiting approval from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) authorities.

Six bodies of tortured and disfigured males was found floating near Welihinda Thotupola in the Maha Oya - Alawwa (North West Province). One of the bodies was identified as 24 year old Naresh Rajadadurai. On 26th June Naresh Rajadadurai left his work place, a video shop in Wellawatte, at 8.15pm and was on his way home at Sri Saranankara Road, Dehiwela within the Colombo city limits. He was stopped on the way, in front of a hotel, forced into a white van and taken away by unidentified persons.

By aerial bombardment on a market in Chunnakkam, a woman was killed and six other civilians were injured.

1997: Mass protest in Mannar - UNHCR will be handed pettition
Screened from the eyes of the world, thousands of desperate Tamils have gathered in Mannar to march against Sri Lanka's long-running food and medicine siege of Vanni, and what they perceive as a "war of extermination" against the Tamil people. Slogans and banners decry the repressive measures enforced by the Sinhala army in army-occupied areas, the regularity of rapes of Tamil women by Sinhala armed forces and the ruthless army tactics being employed to capture Tamil territory - i.e., crop burning, deliberate refugee generation and economic strangulation. The Confederation of Civilian Organisations and Union of NGOs organised the protest, which will end by a petition being handed through the UNHCR to the Sri Lankan president, who is directly responsible for this state of affairs.

1997 : A Tamil man gunned down by SL Army
A Tamil man who went to recover possessions from the house he deserted when Sri Lankan troops invaded Kilinochchi has been shot dead by the Sinhala occupation forces. The victim, Markandu Kumar from Skanthapuram, was a young man with a large family. Sri Lankan troops operate a shoot-to-kill policy on Tamils returning to collect items from their former homes. There are scores of such cases recorded in the past year.

2000 : Medicine shortages prompt demonstration
Hundreds of people staged a demonstration in front of the office of Medicine Sans Frontiers (MSF) at Puddukudiyiruppu in the Mullaithivu District in the north-east of the island demanding that the aid agency should take immediate steps to get down enough drugs to save the lives of patients.

2000: Fisherman killed in air attack
A fisherman was killed and two others wounded in an air attack by Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) kfir jets in Pooneryn region, around 2.30 p.m. Saturday the Voice of Tigers (VoT) radio said in its news broadcast this morning.

1997 :Man Carrying Coconuts Shot Dead By Army
A young man - Kumar - was shot dead by Sri Lankan armed forces occupying Kilinochchci when his bullock cart carrying coconuts was ambushed in Uruthirapuram. Another man, Pathmanathan, was badly injured. The fate of three others who were on the same cart is not yet known.

1997 :Tamil School Bombed - Two Children Critical
Low-flying Sri Lankan Kfir jets struck at a Tamil school in Munrumurippu Palapani (Mankulam) today. Bombs and rockets blasted the building which was also housing displaced people. The attack which took place at 7.30 am has critically injured two Tamil girls. One girl is Muniandy Nirmalaranee, the other has not yet been identified. The incident resembles one which occurred during the government's recent operation to occupy Jaffna. On that occasion dozens of school children were killed at a place called Nargakoil and foreign aid workers on the ground confirmed the tragedy. Sri Lanka continues such assaults on civilians with impunity.

1998: Sinhala Soldiers Shoot And Kill Tamil Civilian In Occupied Jaffna
The occupying Sinhala armed forces this week have arbitrarily shot and killed a 35-year old Tamil civilian in Point Pedro near the Vallipuram Vishnu temple. The man, Sellathurai, was from the nearby Manatkadu area.

1996 : Vinayakamoorthy Nalliah [ 85 M from Nedunkerni, Vavuniya ]
SL army deliberately opened fire on two pedestrians summarily execiting killing an 85 yr old man and fatally injuring another.

1997: Kumar [ M from Kilinochchci ]
He was shot dead by SLA while carrying coconuts on his bullock cart.
